Camera Sling Question.

Hi,
I've been thinking of getting one of these Sun Sniper camera slings. http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-sun-sniper-one-camera-strap/p1520200

My only concern is having to screw it into the tripod mount in the bottom of the camera grip (7D), It would normally have a 70-200 lens + flash attached & as I do a lot of sport photography would be getting a lot of ..how can I put this...non wrapped in cotton wool treatment. :lol:

Would the tripod mount in the grip of a 7D take the pressure of this sort of weight hanging on it & being bashed around all day do you think?

Talking about "being bashed around all day", (from one of the reviews):-
forgetting it was there, I leaned against a wall and knocked my lens!

One of our new advertisers is selling a strap system like that and on the video it is shown attached to the tripod mount on the lens instead. I fancy getting the dual camera setup.

Hi Gramps,
It slipped right off my left shoulder while I was snapping away with my other body & lens a week ago, crashed into the road. Luckily no damage done but could've been very expensive.:gag:

Hi Darren,
I don't have a tripod mount on my 70-200 as I never use that lens on a mono or tripod, also I tend to change lenses on that body (wide-angles & suchlike) & keep the other body with a 300 or 400mm on.

I have a similar one bought off of eBay and use it on my gripped 50D (3rd party). I was out all day with my 70-200 f4L with no problems at all.

I'm definitely getting the double sling version so I can have a film and digital or pair of digital cameras on at the same time.
 
I have decided to go for the eBay option as at only 30 notes, its not too bad if I don't get on with . Some guys on here have got it and love it.
 
Can I be convinced that these are any better or more effective than the traditional strap that comes with the camera? I might buy one if I can be.

Yes they are better, by a long way.

I have a two camera sling by another manufacturer, which can be broken down to two individual slings for when you only want to use one camera.
I use them with a 5d with grip, three times a week and never had a problem.
Nor have i with a 1d and 70-200 f2.8IS, i don't use the tripod ring as i find it gets in the way.

The OEM straps are neck straps these are not, some adviantages off the top of my head:

1.Dont tangle
2. dont sit aorund the neck
3. dont slip off if leaned to one side, unlike a neck strap over the sohulder.
4. qwick draw abilty
5. Dont bounce around like crazy when walking
6. easy to attach/detach if not needed.

im sure there are more.

The advantage to a tripod collar in this instance is balance. I normally use tripod collar, but have used the grip thread on occasions when I want only one bady and two lenses of the go and as I said earlier, not had a problem in that respect, though it does mean the camera/lens hangs sort of parallel to your leg and wiggles arround much more easily. If you can get a collar, you will probably find it a better option - perhaps order an extra camera mount to make things quick if swapping lenses. :thumbs:


Darren, the double strap is bloody marvellous and can be a single when you need it to be.

I can imagine! I want one. I am just setting up my business and when I set my first lot of vat back and claim all the equipment that I have bought against the capital allowance for the first year I should have about £5K for new kit :) The list is getting longer and longer but seriously thinking of keeping £4K to one side for a D4 :D

I thought these straps were 'over the head and slung down opposite side of shoulder. |How did it slip off?

I have the sun sniper strap and I have to say its amazing!

Comfy, works a treat, my d300s and 70-200 hang nicely behind me and is so easy to grab and lift to my eye. Fantastic!

The screw mount that screws in to the tripod mount is high quality too.

I paid £35 at digital depot

For my 300/2.8 + tc and 7D I use a Black Rapid strap attached to an Arca QR clamp which is in turn attached to the lens plate on the tripod foot, works great. When I want to mount the combo on a tripod I just disconnect the QR clamp.

The Black Rapid straps are a bit more than that - You could make a home-made one for a lot less but with around £6k worth of gear hanging from it I would sooner not take that chance myself.

Totally agree which is why I got my sling from ebay for sub £20!

I'd recomend them to anyone it is actually the best purchase I've made since getting my camera, it makes me wan to carry it around as it is no longer an effort.

Hi Malcolm,

I meant that the normal camera strap that I had over my left shoulder instead of around my neck slipped off, that's when I started thinking about the sling type (didn't explain myself very well I'm afraid).
I find a camera hanging around my neck especially with something like a 70-200 lens & flash on very uncomfortable, it also gets in the way of using the second body with the 300 or 400 on.

I can recommend the R-Strap range.

I dropped lucky and picked up one of the last Black Rapid RS-5 straps Amazon had in stock at the time on special offer from for the same price as the RS-4/7's
 
Looking at all the positive responses on this thread I am almost convinced. Tis my birthday in just over a week so if anyone asks what I would like, then I am likely to suggest one of these straps.
 
just waiting for my ebay one to arrive and see how it fares. The only thing i might change is to get some black rapid tripod point attachements.
 
I use the Black Rapid strap, great if your out walking, only draw back I have is the dial
on the top gets moved so you take a pice only to find your now shooting in manual mode
not av/tv.

Hi Geoff,

I took the plunge today & picked up a Black Rapid strap, I went for that over the Sun Sniper because as far as I can make out the Sun Sniper one is not adjustable. Now obviously I haven't used it in anger in the big wide world out there yet but I've had a damn good pose & practice with it in front of the bedroom mirror.:lol:

1st impressions are ..it's fantastic, very comfortable & the camera comes easily to hand & more importantly to eye. Yep I'm in love with it already (Mrs Chimper reckons I used to look at her like that):lol:

The Optech ones look pretty good in the ads. too, (& cheaper) but I couldn't find a store near me that had them in stock & I wanted to try the sling this weekend.

Geoff, best start dropping hints for your birthday as soon as possible. I always find a few mags left around lying open at a page with an ad. for what you want a good way. ;)

I find that happens a lot with the 7D anyway Richard, the dial on top could definately do with some kind of lock on it.

I think I'm going to get one of these as well. I've heard nothing but good things about them.:thumbs:

Which model did you get?
Also, what is the length of the strap at it's longest adjustment? Any chance you could lenghten it to it's extreme, and then measure the distance from clip to mid point, if you know what I mean. I've tried to find this out online but it never seems to be listed, and I have a bit more "bulk" than most for it to go round.;):D

Am I the only one who uses the standard op-tech strap worn the same way that the RapidStrap etc are used?

I use the strap across my body so that the camera is at about hip height with the lens tucked round towards my back.

Admittedly you don't get a sliding mechanism to move the camera up to eye-level, but I don't see how the rapidstrap etc could be any quicker to get the camera up to eye-level as I find the camera moves entirely freely anyway.

The benefit that you don't get (as far as I can see) from the rapidstrap etc is the cushioning that the (neoprene?) part of the op-tech strap provides.

Is it just that I happen to be a height and build suitable for wearing the op-tech strap like this?

Mark Get the sling adapter for the optech strap. Thats way the padded area always stays at the top instead of swing round the body when you lift the camera upto to eye level.
 
Maybe I'll give it a try - perhaps it's the kind of thing you only understand after trying it.

Hi Stuart,

I got the RS-7. The actual sling from shoulder to bottom of sling when folded in half is 30"
(762mm) so 60" (1525mm) total girth. The sliding carabina that holds the camera hangs a further approx 2.25" (60mm).

I got myself a black rapid rs-4 from Ian who is a member on here ordered it thursday morning and it came today it also as the new r3 fasten.
 
I like the design of these type of straps, the one thing that I wonder about is the reliance on a single screw thread, compared to the 2 ring style fittings on a "traditional" strap fitting.

Has anyone had any problems of the screw fitting coming loose after a day's walking?

I'm thinking of getting a Black Rapid or the Sun Sniper version.

That was one of my worries too Chris. If you screw the eye part in firmly it seems very secure as the rubber washer grips it well.
You could also run a bit of para cord or suchlike from one of the strap holders on the camera to the sliding carabina for a bit of extra safety if you wanted.
