Camera shops in Hong Kong

Could you do me a favor when you're out there? - Take a look at some lens prices (nothing in particular). I'm intrigued to see how much the prices do actually vary.

You lucky man Rhubarb & don't forget to up your credit limit on your plastic friend....

wow have a great time i always wanted to go. I have no idea bout shops i have allways ordered from hong kong online. Can you possibly see how much a canon 350d is out there im interegued.!

if you're buying canon (I didn't see any other makes) there is a little shop on Honk Kong island called Hing Lee Camera Co. (25 lyndhurst terrace. very friendly, stock everything and prices very competitive - I picked up a 70-200 f4 is for the equivalent of around £480. It's in the central district and there are a few more camera shops around there like photo scientific on stanley street - well known for being cheap i think, but had absolutely no joy getting them to come down on the price.

Then there is tsim sha tsui in kowloon - stay away from nathan road (full of electronic shops and people selling knock off watches) as it can be a bit dodgy - head to the smaller streets off nathan rd (I think granville rd) and there are quite a few camera shops used by locals. It's a minefield around there but explore and you'll find the street I'm on about.

haggle hard, there are loads of shops around so play them off each other - but look as though you have the cash to buy immediately or they won't come down very much

Mongkok is worth checking out, I saved about 100 quid on a 400 quid bundle at Wing Shing. If you like film stuff, Tin Cheung in Tsim Sha Tsui has good prices.

try the company called broadway there are branches everywhere.
this is if you want the approved HK dealer for nikon, canon etc so prices are a bit higher but still better than here
if prices are really cheap then it tends to be the 'grey market' goods

Thanks all, I've been before so no all about Nathan Road, but last time was on holiday with my wife so didn't really get to look too much. I'm staying in central so I'll have a wander round and see what I can find.

As for a list of things to bring back, thought I might open the flood gates, a mate of mine has asked me to do a price check on 9 different lenses !!! As you say will be interesting to see how much cheaper it is to buy direct rather than through the likes of DigitalRev etc

Another vote here for Broadway. I went to HK last year and spent ages going around all these different stores that I had researched on the web. In the end I bought from Broadway as they are a huge chain, were very competitive on price and I basically trusted that it was genuine HK stock, with a worldwide guarantee. They stamped all my warranty cards and since I have been back I’ve had a flash that I bought repaired at Canon UK with no problems.

There are other shops, hundreds in fact, but the prices were all very similar. If I go back again and need to buy, I’ll save a load of legwork and just use Broadway.

Hi all well I've just got back and its a fantastic place just as I'd remembered. Prices for somethings are better than here and for others not so good. Lenses on the whole appear to be about 30% cheaper - although that varied

Nikon 50mm f1.8 £48 in HK, £79 Warehouse Express
Sigma 105 Macro f2.8 £196 in HK, £268 WHE
Nikon 80-400 VR £598 in HK, £959 WHE

Flashes on the other hand were much cheaper

Nikon SB400 £58 in HK, WHE £149
Nikon SB600 £102 in HK, WHE £198

Filters were half price, but CompactFlash cards were about the same, if not slightly more expensive (especially at the airport).

If anyone goes out there, I can definitely recommend 3 shops in Mong Kok, staff friendly, knowledgeable and they don't try and rip you off (always full of locals). Prices probably slightly higher and fixed, but you know what you're getting.

- Man Shing 106 Tung Choi Street South
- Wing Shing, 66 Sai Yeung Choi
- and another round the corner - can't remember the name.

A good website for local prices is http://www.ygdragon.net

In the end I didn't come back with any lenses (I surprised myself), but at those prices I had to get a couple of flashes and filters.

Wow sounds like some good deals. I would love to go out there and go shopping for camera stuff.

Ting Cheung Camera in TST has a good reputation, and is from my experience very professional and fair priced.

Hing Lee in central is a gamble, my nephew was sold an ruthlessly overpriced second hand nikon 18-105mm lens quite bad fungus inside. When he took it back he was basically laughed at and treated very rude.

Dont go there for second hand stuff if your not very experienced and know how to examine the equipment.

TST tends to be a tourist trap so usually expect to barter hard and still not get the best, Mong Kong or Sham Sui Po used to be excellent although haven't been in a good few years :D

Both Mong Kok and SSP are on the MTR lines and easy to get to :D

Do remember to dump the box before you come back, and bring the lens through customs with the rest of your kit (ideally in hand luggage).
