Hi folks,

My mate has asked me to recommend a camera to take on a safari holiday. Budget being around a few hundred quid. I drew a blank other than the sony compacts with the 30x zoom but what would anyone else recommend?

The Panasonic FZ range are possibly worth a look. They have decent optics with zoom range.

So many possibilities. Does he care about size and weight? Is he a happy-snapper or would he invest time and thought in curating and developing images? What will he do with any images he brings back - facebook/print for album/hang on wall/sell for stock etc?

The obvious answer is a decentish superzoom compact like the Canon SX60 or Fuji HS50. Neither are 'great' cameras but both can deliver images that will look OK on Facebook, blogs and in small prints. For a very lightweight review look here: http://www.techradar.com/news/photography-video-capture/cameras/best-bridge-camera-1259503

Thanks for responses. Not sure on use of images but would guess net and maybe small prints at a push.

Other demands were, easy to use! and nothing too big for practicality?

Will go read the links and report back. Many thanks.

I've owned the previous version of the Fuji (great handling except for fully manual mode, image quality compared to the current model) and also used the previous model of the Canon (behaves like a giant compact camera rather than a fixed lens SLR, better image quality than the Fuji but less good handling). I'd recommend a camera with EVF because for a novice (and for an experienced user) you get a good idea of what the image will actually look like.

My mate has picked up a canon but can't remember the exact model. The predecessor to the sx60, is it a 50? Anyway, thanks for the advice provided.

SX50 - yup, good choice.
