Camera RAW files..(cant open them !!)

Hi All
Can someone tell me what I need to do to get my computer (Windows XP) to recognise RAW files from my camera (Nikon D200 )
When I attatch my camera and commence downloading, only Jpegs are shown - where are my RAW images ?
Am I only ever going to use Jpegs ?

Confession - I used to be able to read them in Windows Picture viewer (or whatever its called ) but Ive recently reformatted my computer and I think I need a 'plugin' - but where from and where does it go ?

Welcome Dave.

Not sure what software you are using to open your image files. If you are using Photoshop then you can download your needs from HERE
Scroll down the page is the download and also a tutorial...

If you are using some other software then just google it...
 
You need to download the windows codec for nef files

http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/

This will allow windows to see thumbnails and preview/slideshow images

Oh and Welcome to TP:)
 
I've had problems with this before. But as I opened Adobe bridge they all appeared. And from there I just imported them to Photoshop. But if your looking to use them for web use or anything similar you will need to download a RAW convertor that converts raw format files into JPEG

Hi Kim - thanks for your reply, but, I dont want them converted to Jpegs, my Jpeg files open OK, but I need the RAW image as well

Hi and thanks for the help, but still no joy Im afraid. I have phoned Nikon UK and they sent me a link for a file that (he said) would enable the RAW files to be seen, but that didn't work. I have downloaded the link that you sent and that doesn't seem to work either, but thankyou - if I get it 'sorted' I will post my remedy !!!

Hi Guys - thanks for all your suggestions but Im still RAW less !!
Ive tried Faststone -Fastpicture viewer - NEF Codec - Nikon thumbnail updater - I think it must be a 'Windows' based update but dont know what

Hi Rocket - I use CS4 and can read RAW files (I have loads of raw files) in Photoshop - just cant get them off my card...

goto the microsoft site an search for raw thumbnail viewer wnd it will come with the download thatyou need.
 
Hi Davec223 - tried that download - still no Raw images showing.
(ps I do have raw images on the card - ive taken some today)

+1 to that, :agree:. I downloaded it about 2 weeks ago, it's so much easier than using ViewNX/seperate program, you can just use windows picture viewer after you've installed the codecs, very good.
 
Hi All who replied - Im OK now -sort of - can get my RAW files off the card with 'Faststone' - I know it was recommended earlier......anyway thank you for your replies and direction
