Camera posers

Last weekend I attended the Abergevenny food festival, and was a little dismayed to see 3 people wandering around each with at least 2/3 Pro canon camers around their necks, not once were they seen to take any photos, in4 hours whilst I was there.
There were a great many opportunities but I came to the conclusion that they were just posing.
Why do some people do this ? I could understand it when we used film, but with digital there is no excuse for not using the kit.

Maybe they'd been somewhere else beforehand and didn't want to leave their kit in the car? Who knows.

There are people out there, and on here, who have top end gear because they can afford it, rather than because they need it, use it to it's potential, or even know how to use it properly. I used to think that this was a bit silly, but I suppose that it's no different to having a fancy watch or a Porsche, so I don't have a problem with that myself any more, but I can understand how it can lead to camera envy (not that I'm suggesting you are envious).

Food Festival must have been pretty boring if 4 hours of tog-watching was more interesting

Have you thought that maybe they were in abergavenny for another reason other than what you think?
Perhaps they were freelance and just didn't give a monkeys? Perhaps someone famous was coming to town and they were killing time?
Or perhaps they could afford that many cameras to adorn themselves with for no other reason. What difference does it make?

As has been said what difference does it make to you? they could have been there for a specific reason

They're that good that they're waiting for the perfect moment for the perfect picture- the complete opposite of spray and pray. ;)

lol @ spray and pray, never heard that term used before.... But it fits so well.

Personally I don't think you should have a problem with anyone carrying a camera, regardless if it's a pro or a p&s... It's theirs, they bought it, they can do what they want with it.. And shouldn't need to justify having a a pro/semi pro camera by how they're using them...

I wouldn't let it bother you so much. You do your thing and let others do theirs. There are any number of reasons it could have been the way it is. Posing being towards the bottom of the list I would guess.

Another gearhead bashing thread, fantastic

fantastic opprtunity to take some shots for the " I spotted a togger" thread

I could under stand if it was at a photo show or the likes, but at a food festival, 90% of the people there wouldn't have an idea what was around their necks

I have, but not since I worked in family planning :exit:

I've gone to events before now that sounded interesting, had my camera around my neck in hope of getting some good shots but never raised it to my eye in the end as the event was so dull.

I did it last year at a local mop fair near Christmas, was there for about 4 hours too. I took 20 shots, and they were of my kids.

Looks like a green eyed monster thread to me.:shake:

How can you judge other peoples ability (or lack of it) just because they don't seem to be using their kit at a particular point - kit which I can only presume you would like to have yourself? Did you really watch them constantly for four hours?:suspect:

No doubt if they were taking a shot or two, you might still think they were posing because it's nice kit?

Lets face it, every Porsche driver is a poser - especially if it's parked in their driveway not being used... right?

no green eyed monster me, i just thought " no wonder they look knackered with all the gear around their necks and what a waste of time" everyone else was busy sampling the food, and taking pictures.
PS I have enough decent Canon gear but I dont carry all on the off chance I might take a shot. I carried 1 5D3 with 24-105mm lens and it was enough.

Could have been any number of reasons why they where there and not taking pics.

Thing is these days people walk into Jessops or anywhere else for that matter to buy a P&S and a lot of people walk out the door with a DSLR, the amount of people I seen this year whilst on holiday with DSLR's was unbelievable, either that or a camera phone, not a lot with a P&S.

I play spot the green button(auto), when walking around as a little fun to myself and for no other reason than to be nosy. Does not bother me one jot if some one has a better camera than me.
You will be surprised how many people own a Porsche or a Ferrari but it will never see the red line or a track or even be driven in anger.

Let's face it, we live in a consumerist society... Everything is geared for *** to want things they may not need. Not saying that these togs were one of the above ***.

It's the way things are. A product of which are gear heads... Its life, no point mocking or being annoyed with them or even feeling envious.

We're all driven to want heavier, lighter, more pixels, sharper, higher fps, better build, red dot, red ring, gold ring...... Even me!

I often go on 10 mile hikes and I carry my camera gear with me every time, but I've often come back with nothing because nothing caught my eye. Does that make me a poser??

If so, tough, I don't care what you think

I went up in a hot air balloon last year and used my 450D + 55-250mm continously, taking around 100 images. Beautiful still Worcestershire evening.

The guy next to me had a 7d with a long L series lens. He never switched it on. If he had left it behind we might have climbed a bit higher.

mmm, having read through this: (1) does it matter, your there thats what counts (2) what did you do with your 100 shots? and (3) what on earth is a tog? :)

A mop fair???? A fair with people showing off mops?? That's really dull :)

I would like to think I would get a few hundred shots in 4 hours. Lots of people, lots of opportunities for shots.

That's what I thought, but in the end there just wasn't really anything I felt like shooting. To be fair I was also helping out occasionally at a stall plus I was looking after my 3 kids and queuing for Santa so my mind wasn't really in it either.

More specifically, I believe it it a spoken shorthand used in press offices, as in "Can you get a story on (insert event here) and grab a tog while you're at it.". Often used here and elsewhere to refer to any and all photographers.

I'm another who has decent gear and ofter carries it without using it. My full walkabout kit weighs over 7kg (which makes getting it through the weight restriction on hand luggage interesting, I have to slip a couple of lenses into pockets for a minute or 2) but I'm a big lad (ok, at 49, I'm hardly a lad!) and can handle it. I often have my D700 with a Sigma 24-70 slung around my neck so that if I spot something worth shooting it's immediately to hand.

Thanks Chris. That certainly looks more interesting than my imagined church hall event sponsored by Vileda!

The sad thing is there probably are actual mop fairs. Come to think of it I seem to remember a mop convention last time I was in Vegas :)

It's none of my business, and I really couldn't care less what gear other people own, why they are carrying it, or whether they know how to use it. I feel the same way about Leica threads and comments about rich men's toys, or the premium you pay for a red dot on a Panasonic body.

It's your money, spend it as you please.

Ah photographer well well another tla that groups of like minded people use to baffle non members :):)

Some old fella was referring to me as a flash git today, just because I was using a camera with a stickie out lens rather than an iPhone - if only he could see my embarrassing phone :D

Well seeing as Pierre koffmann was attending and other people like "the baker brothers" attended, they could have been press or staff photographers for any of the foodie magazines..

I am another one who goes out, carries my gear and maybe not takes any shots at all as there is nothing that I find interesting or catches my imagination. Simple as that, then there are other times that I will take loads of pictures trying different things or because the subject matter floats my boat.

What a pointless thread. (Bit like my life really.)

I had the latest pro gear 0nce, and wore it around my neck for any photo opportunity that I may come across. Now it's a 20D and a Tamron, but I use it and wear it around my neck for the same reason. Sure I'm pee'd off not having the kit I once had, but whatever kit you have, it's there waiting for a decent picture to take.

It's what toggers do, and some can afford better/higher spec than others...That's all!

Queuing to see Santa in September is ridiculous imo. Let's leave xmas to nearer xmas.

Not so much a TLA as a contraction of the word, much like 'phone. I suspect there should be a couple of apostrophes surrounding the word 'tog'!

Despite the fact that I have a very nice kitbag, I have spent the last few days carrying just a bridge camera. Very liberating and it far outspecs my D700, although I'm sure it can't match it for ultimate quality.
