Edit My Images

Can i ask which software most people use to get their pics onto their PC? What's the easiest and quickest software? I find Canon Zoombrowser EX confusing. Although i've not done any tutorial on i, i would've thought this type of software should be quite intuitive and almost self explanatory.

I use a free prog called picassa.

It is so easy to quickly upload them to your pc and then I may do slight adjustments in there before taking a pic to photoshop.

I use the free software that came with my epson printer, you tell it which folder and it transfers them there(does renumber and rename them though)

I use the Canon 'EOS utility' software to download the images. Zoombrowser simply uses EOS utility to do it anyway so no need to use zoombrowser (which is confusing and not very intuitive as you point out!).

Glad it's not just me getting old! Cheers for your replies - i'm still interested in which software other people use for whatever reason :)

:agree: EOS Utility does everything I need for transferring, then check through in DPP and open the best in Lightroom for further editing!

I'm currently using Vista's built in malarky but I must say I'm starting to find kinks in it, especially with regards to photo naming (eek, duplicates!), wouldn't use it if I was starting up again.

Interested to take a look at what others are suggesting, especially with regard to nikons.

I just use a card reader and Windows.

Never had a problem yet.......

Mac and Windows (XP) via card readers into Lightroom

I just use Win XP and a card reader.

I don't see the need for any other software for the job, but then I don't do anything, renaming or whatever, on the way in. :)

I use Lightroom, but then I sort into date folders, send a copy to network storage, apply keywords/metadata and set basic develop settings on import...

i use osx and a card reader - simple

I jst copy them over in windows explorer, view them in Faststone Image Viewer (views RAW files and is reasonably fast) & then import to Lightroom from the HD.

Yeh. Faststone for me too. Simple and quick. Decent interface and basic tools. AND FREE.

I just copy and paste off the memory card reader
Make my own dated folder and paste it into it

Dont see why u need complex programmes just to copy and paste for you.

Scratch that, I've switched over to Adobe Bridge as of today!

Quicker, and allows you to add metadata

what's metadata?

Ok, so to narrow this down (as i want to pick some software and stick with it), which will allow me to do anything i want to the picture (if i decide i want to take this route), but still be relatively easy to use? Will all of those already mentioned allow full editing? Including RAW images? Needs to be free of course :D

Why do you copy and paste pictures? Why do you not just select, drag and drop? You do realise that by 'copying' you are committing the contents of the card (however many MBs or GBs that may be) in to PC memory, which it occupies until you either replace it with another copy command, or reboot the PC?

I just drag and drop from a card reader, this is usually quicker than letting some software do it. Wayne

I drag and drop into My "new today" folder then I open bridge, chuck rubbish (at which point there is often nothing more left to do) what's left, I rate and label then put them in their respective folder's IE, birds cats, orchids, Yada, Yada AND then backed up. Anything I think I might want to share is copied into a "work in progress" folder for whatever PP is needed before upload to wherever

I use a card reader onto the PC, then synctoy to back up to an external drive before I do anything else.

sorry to bring this up but I'm having a 'blank' day.

To get my images across on to my pc I connect up the 450d via usb into pc and swithc on the dslr.

Windows does it thing and finds a camera connected and identifies the camera and I use the windows software to copy over to designated folder.

I look in said folder and they are all jpegs (although I have selected RAW format on camera)

Help? I'm obviously doing something wrong or require some software?

I use Sandisk SDHC USB little gadget to put my SDHC card into.

Copy straight off the card onto the PC.

i use a memory card reader onto a temp folder then GIMP which i like alot!!

CF Card into a card reader > Into Lightroom 2 > Import from Disk > Adds them all and can sort by any field on the exif data, usually just sort by the date. Add some metadata if I can be bothered/needed and drop into a catalogue, creating a new one if I don't already have one it fits into.

Perfect. I find the biggest advantage being that any PP versions are saved as ickle files, rather than ending up with like 10 versions of the same image to deal with (10 revisions in lightroom takes up say 300k, rather than 70mb if you were to modify file and save as). All equals a much quicker and easier to manage photo database.

P.S If you don't want to pay the cash for Lightroom then check out Bibble Pro, which I had before and does pretty much everything lightroom does, for a lots less money...

P.P.S Totally baffled why people here import the photo's first and then load into lightroom??! I have only used version 2 to be fair, but surely the version 1 had the "import from device" option?

what's metadata?

Metadata, is basically tagging. Say you have 12000 odd photos in your library. It can be a pain to find something particular, so what you do is when you import the file you place tags like say:-

January, Snow, Kids, Children, Animals, Dog, Play, Winter, Snowball

Then you can run a search through the library and it'll come back with the results. Makes searching through your photos much easier, once you get start getting silly amounts to trawl through.

Because Lightroom as a photo manager is crap. That's manager - not editor. I import mine via a card reader then sort them out with ACDSee. Culling the rubbish, organising in to folders and renaming. Much simpler than Lightroom.

Fair enough..you tried the latest version 2? Seemed quite straight forward to me. It is a touch resource intensive so needs a fairly pokey 'puter.

I have v2 but I haven't gone back and tried any management functions. v1 was so damned irritating and unintuitive and ACDSee was so much easier I can't see them closing the gap sufficiently to convert me.

It's probably that your PC doesn't recognise the RAW format. Nikon RAW requires a plugin for windows (available from Nikon.co.uk) so I would think that Canon is the same - check on their website, and possibly on MicroSoft too....

Yip, purely for the process of getting the data from camera to pc Windows does it all. After that you can use what editor you wish.

I currently use a multicard reader since I have 3 different types of card.
Prior to that I just plugged the camera in to a USB port with the supplied lead.
Windows recognised the camera and gave the required onsreen prompts.

Cheers.

I had since installed Digital Photo Pro - Canons own software and now I cna import both jpeg and Raw via this software. So what yoiu mentioned is correct. Since Windows doesnt recognise the RAW on the camera and only the jpeg I couldn't even transfer it (I think a card reader would also solve this)

Thanks again
