I've only ever bought one: Practical Photography. I didn't find it that useful to be honest.

They all say "The UK's Best Photo Mag" on them, but which one really is? Digital Photo is always the one which strikes me, but it costs quite a bit, does it not?

I once subscried to Photography Monthly but eventually the same articles came around again, albeit looking slightly different.

Rather than subscribe I find it better to just buy them in the shop when you see a particular magazine with an article that interests me....to be honest it's not that often

Recently subscribed to PhotoPlus, find it quite good for a beginner like me.

The free fastpack 250 was an added bonus! :D

they repeat year on year as mentioned. occasionally some do have something interesting to say but on the whole I'm seeking specific info and hence the internet becomes the best source for an answer and to satisfy my curiosity. Professional photographer mag has more variety and doesn't seem to repeat itself, more staying with current developments.
at the far end of the scales are those 'arty' photo 'mags', like Ag, which may not be suitable for 99% of those that want something to flip through on the train but can be a good read involving theories and techniques beyond other mags.

well it would save a bit of cash , but the reason i get em each month is i would forget to look half the time .

and what we don`t need to read now we might in a few months . i know i have said " i`m sure there is something about this in ons of my mags "

has anyone tried Professional Photographer or Adobe

i know the Adobe one is a bit steep price wise

Rog

I buy no particular mag.

I look at them and, if there is an article I want to study I'll buy it.

The internet is the best Camera Magazine ;)

I've stopped buying camera mags as I found them boring as nothing really intrested me any more, also they never give you the full story and sometimes are bias towards a brand.

AP, PP and occasionally PM. Subscribed to PP a year or so back when the freebie was an Arctic Butterfly (more expensive than the sub!). Migt go for another sub if I find another freebie worth having.

must admit some of the freebie`s are quite good .

i take a look on the shelves this weekend

IMHO Professional Photographer is great. Very interesting subjects, not your usual repeated 'how to take' topics, but stuff like, how to promote yourself, your business, tax issues, making money form your work etc..plus product reviews.

Worth the £30 for a years subscription.

A few to take a look at this weekend .

cheers for the input guys

I only subscribe to EOS magazine which is quarterly, and pick up the odd magazine from the store, but rarely.

Another vote for professional photographer here. And I also pop into Borders and pick up some of the American mags. Ok, they are not so good if you are looking to buy anything. (It will annoy the heck out of you how much we pay here in the UK) But the articles are often brilliant. You can also pick up on business tips and trends in some markets well ahead of when they arrive here.

ok now im sold on the Professional Photographer but as i got a freebie when i subscribed to the Digital Camera mag anyone got a current issue with a offer code for an other freebie?

Michael

the other thing i found with magazines in general there must be a selection that are under the one company and use the same features and pictures one month to the next, in other named magazines.

Michael

I only buy ' Photoshop Creative ' on a regular basis. The others I pick up as and when I'm in a shop. I like ' Digital Photo ' and ' Photo Plus '.

I love the mags aimed more at the fine art side rather than the usually techno-slavering that goes on over the latest cameras. Photoworks, AG and Lenswork are cool. I have a soft spot for Photoworks as its a UK mag (or periodical or whatever it is classed as)

I get bored with the usual mags as they seem to repeat a lot of the same stuff year in year out. There seems to be lacking a magazine aimed at the more intermediate or advanced photographer. It seems to go from beginner publications straight up the pro level stuff. Nothing in between which is weird.

For a camera mag I subscribe to photography monthly, but as others have said, all the monthlys get a bit repetative after a while. For a photography mag I get 125 - it may only come out every six months but at least it is filled with photographs rather than adverts, and most of the pics I have never seen before!

Any staff vacancies?!

 That's what I asked Ian (Kerso's) sister Heather!

Yep, I believe Practical Photography and Digital Photo are sister mags..

As for mags, I only tend to buy individual editions, only if they teach me something significant I didn't know..I certainly wouldn't buy a mag for the sake of it.

I think the most mags I ever bought in one month was six, just after I got my first DSLR, when different topics were discussed in each but they're totally covered by each other over 6 months or so..

My attention has been moved to Professional Photographer, because of the equipment reviews, technical bulletins and business advice, as photography is something I really want to do as a career - wildlife, cos I can't think of any subjects worth selling in a photograph than animals, birds etc. Absolutely awesome!

amazing how many camera mags there are .

one i did like was digital photography made easy . but it has gone now .
maybe i liked it because i had a photo printed in it lol

About 2 years ago, Professional Photographer was great and I had a sub to it. Now-a-days its as thin as a pamphlet and repeats information like Practical/Monthly.

It's also very condescending now, more than it used to be. "So you want to be an events photographer" series got my goat more than anything else.

Now I read Digital Photographer, as they have useful lighting info in each month but even that's a skim read these days.

digital camera and photo plus!

I currently have subscriptions to Practical Photography and Digital Camera. The former is probably better as an all round toggers mag, the latter has some great images from around the world.

I am planning on cutting both subs as I'm getting to saturation and repetition point after a year.

Amateur Photographer gets bought regularly - but it's only really half a magazine - the back pages are almost entirely adverts, and the same ones at that. Still, I often find myself reading through the small-ads, dreaming about lenses I can't afford, or systems I'll never use.

Believe me, dreaming about a Leica M6 is far cheaper than owning one... same goes for the Bronica medium format stuff...

Anyway, I subscribe to Digital SLR user, which is OK, but like most magazines, gets a little repetitive. One thing you can do is change your subscription at anytime to professional photography monthly - which, although I'm not a pro, seems to hold more interesting articles to my reading. I guess it's like tennis - to raise your game, you need to play with someone better..

I've only just started my Photographic journey but I have subscribed to PhotoPlus for the Manfrotto Monopod that's free. Plus I have just got my Canon 50D and PhotoPlus is Canon Edition (Might help me learn some things to start with.)

I've bought 4 mags this month and they all have pretty much the same stuff in them.

congratulations Garymercer on your new 50D purchase, i think that that will be my next camera unless i can be confinced that the 5D MkII will give me something extra...

regarding camera mags i used to subscribe to Digital Photo, but realised very quickly that they were repeating stuff every three to six months... I then just bought what took my fancy in WH Smiths on a saturday afternoon (which is probably the best option as all mags have good and bad issues) more recently i subscribed to Practical Photography were i received a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW as a free gift which was good for me because i was looking at buying one at the time...

I read TP most days...

I picked up a 1 year Practical Photography subscription cheap through Tesco Clubcard points, great as I'm a newbie. Every couple of weeks I pop into Bury St Edmunds where there is a stall selling previous months mags for £1 (or 3 for £2.50). I pick up any interesting looking mags that take my fancy.

thanks for all the input guys

loads more to take a look at now . i think it is time to go through my mags and take out and save the pages that are of any help .

still not sure which if any mag i will keep
