Camera lens...

Dont bother wasting money on a UV or protection filter. I've never used them and have never had any issues with my front elements.

As already stated, adding an extra non precision piece of glass in front of a lens will only degrade IQ and certainly cause flare in bright conditions.
 
Dont. Simply, just save your money and use the lens cap!
 
IIRC did you not do some water drop shots the other week an get some splashes on the lens? if this is right, it may have something to do with this and all you need to do is give the lens a proper clean with lens cleaning fluid, and a decent lens cloth.
 
Lol yes!! This is why I think it may be safer for me to get a filter if it doesn't effect the pics too much haha

I use Hoya Pro Filters on most of the lenses I use, and the affect on image quality is rather small, however when shooting direct at light strong light sources there is more flaring.

Personally I hate UV filters because of the flaring, but quite a few times I've finished shooting and somehow the UV filter is covered with finger prints - I'd rather clean the finger prints off a filter than repeatedly off the front element.

I always use filters - the only time I take off the UV filter is when I am using my Lee Filters.

it is quite possibly just a build up of minerals and crap in the water that are showing, its no big problem it will not cause any noticable issue with photos apart from a possability of a little flair shooting into the sun.

even if you scratch the front element it probably wont show up in the pics, lenses don't work that way, the image isn't focused at the front element. A scratch might cause the image to be a little softer and lose contrast a bit in a tiny spot on the image. Filters for protection are a waste of time IMO and they degrade image quality.

You could try the really cheap filter first.

But as said you MAY get more flare when shooting against the light.

When you first get it take a series of pics with and without the filter to see whether it makes any real difference to the quality - especially sharpness.

I use Jessops filters which I have always found quite good and fairly cheap.

And I feel a lot better about cleaning a filter than a lens.

I agree 100% - I have UV filters on ALL my lenes, to protect the glass nothing more- my images seem to be as sharp as I'd expect

It's not about sharpness, it's about flare and ghosting, of which you'll get lots.
 
Do filters such as the lovely Tiffen I am getting :) or the Nikon NC cause vignetting even at 18mm??
 
Do you have a local camera shop? If so, perhaps take the camera & lens in to them & ask their opinion as to whats causing it.
