Why does my camera keep getting specks of dust on the lens that look really metallic?? They wont brush off with the brush off my lens pen, but when I breath on the lens and then use the carbon end they go away, but others will appear... is this normal??

I imagine it to be minerals or whatever might be in a liquid that got on and then dried. You see them and they look like you describe. Some are 'harder' than others and thus come off easier. ....breathing a huff of condensed exhale breath adds a touch of moisture that may indeed help your lens paper. Better to use a spectacle cloth. In fact you may accidentally huff something onto the lens that way

Do you get them?

So they are not a crack in the coating?? Like I said they go away, but others appear quickly after, not in the same place!! I use a lens pen??

Yeah some are hard to remove :(

I thought it was broke :'(

Ah, I see! Nope, I don't think its broken, but get a lens pen and use it, Eventually it will go away!

Yeah I have been doing, but others appear... it's obviously just me :suspect:

Yep, sometimes, especially if there is liquid droplets in the air (the chip fat comment wasn't all a joke).

So you don't think my lens is dead??

I thought it was summet to do with the coating and got well stressed :(

Weeeeeeell, there is that Japanese Lens Flu going around and it can be pretty serious!

Sorry, I tease...

Simple way to test, does it happen with the lens cap on?

What do you mean??

If you get the spots on the lens when you have the lens cap on then it's something odd with the lens, if you don't then the cause is environmental.

Hmmmm this is gonna sound stupid, but how do I tell??

Don't get me wrong they are never in the same place and do eventually rub off!!

Put the lens cap on.

Just given it a clean and took the lens cap off and on a few times, the lens cap didn't seem to do anything... it did make the lens a bit smudged if I put it on just after I had used the lens pen??

Clean the lens, leave the lens where it is for a few hours and see if it has the dots on it.

If the dots are caused by stuff floating around then the uncapped lens will get dots on, the capped lens won't. If it is caused by floating stuff then there's nothing wrong with the lens and maybe you need to change the stove extractor filter.

I'll give the lens on ago tonight :D Is it likely to be the lens??

It has been outside in the sun today, so maybe that has summet to do with it...

I'd have thought it has nothing to do with the lens personally.

Just keep it covered when not in use, if you have a bag or case for your lenses, put the end cap on and the lens cap and put it way :)

Nope doesn't happen with the cap on :D Not gonna try it with the cap off incase it gets broke!!

once you get the lens clean- I suggest you invest in a UV filter- they screw onto the front of the lens and offer a lot of protection

just make sure you buy the correct thread size for the lens you want to use it on

Good luck

Les

Do filter's effect your pics in a bad way??

The 18-55 filter size is 52mm

I too use UV to protect my lenses and recommend them. Easier to clean and good protection.

Wow that is CHEAP- however: it will offer the protection I mentioned

Les :D

Maybe a iccle bit too cheap?? Or does it not make a difference??

Also can you put the cap on still with them on??

Even a clear piece of glass would offer protection to the lens coating and yes you can still fix the lens cap on with a filter in place

Les

Would you give it ago??

It wont damage my lens if its cheap will it??

I wouldn't use a UV filter, they are not good on digital. Look for a clear lens protector if you must use a filter. UV was great for film cameras but have no place in digital. Sensors have UV filters built in and I think you will find you will get mysterious blotches of flare appearing on your photo's. I bought one for each of my Kit lenses, tried them a couple of times and took them off, haven't used them since.

If you fit a cheap UV filter on the lens you may find lens flare on your images, caused by light being reflected off the inside of the filte,r back into the lens.

Just clean the lens, the hood is there to give some protection and the foreign objects you dislike will still settle on the filter which you will then have to clean as frequently as the lens.

Little marks are unlikely to show up on the image so you don't have to keep them all off constantly.
Look at the link to see how marks/scratches change image quality.
