Yes
Just had an e-mail from a firm called Camera King. Can't remember using them but suppose I must have in the past.

The e-mail tells me that they have updated their server and I have to login on the attached link to update my password to something more secure. Something smells not quite right here.

Anyone else had a similar mail, and is it genuine? As I can't remember using them I might just forget about them.

I smell a rat. Why don't you just go to the site without logging in, and see if it's familiar? Just don't click on the link in the email!

Edit: There is a UK site called "Camera King", I just looked.

Yeah, I didn't use the link. Went to their site and tried to login but my password failed. Must have used it a long time ago - if ever - and have no idea what my password might be. Don't want to use the password reminder thing for obvious reasons.

Mail has been deleted, unused.

I too had that email but have just bought something of them via Ebay so they do exist.

I received the same email yesterday. I have purchased from them in the past (most recently a Rocket dust blower about a month ago) but always on eBay so I have never directly given them a user name or password. I presumed that the email was either spam or a phishing attempt and ignored it.

FWIW the link provided in that e.mail. (Yes I got one as well) does go direct to the Camera King Website so no sign of it being a Phishing attempt as they are always munged to a hidden location.

I have only ever bought from them via ebay so never had an account with them to need a password change, so its probably just been sent to everyone on their contacts list rather than just their own account holders.

Thanks. Can you tell me how to find out if mails are genuine?

I think that Camera king is on Ebay, and has a number of different accounts,,if you have purchased anything from them they may have your email address and slot you into their Marketing..

Why are you shouting?

The fact remains, you should never use an e-mail link to update information. Always go to the website.

Knowing whether or not the e-mail is genuine is not the point. It's the one mistake that will screw you.

As Simon says above never use the email link. Look how many emails purport to come from your bank.

You can try checking the source if it's important to you but it doesn't really matter for somebody like this. If you want to use them again you can start a new account or sort out the password then. Camera King has quite a history across the internet. There seem to be, or have been, several of them, one in the US, some are dodgy but one of them isn't. I have always wondered why you would stick with this name, good as it is, if you were being tainted by others.

The email address you use for PayPal is visible in the PayPal transaction and would normally be the same as you use for eBay.
I got the email too, sent to my eBay email rather than the main domain address I used when I bought direct from them.

I also received an email from Cameraking stating the exact same thing. When they dont use my name in the email it always makes me wonder why that would be (phishing etc) I have used both ebay and amazon however I found the email odd and deleted it anyway. If it is through either of them I'll just go through them anyway direct.

The easy way is to hover your mouse pointer over the clickable link and then look at the bottom of your e,mail client it should show the same address as shown in the link.

What a lot of phishing attempts do is to munge the address so for example you get a link saying log onto your account here www.barclays.co.uk/signin and when you hover your mouse over that link you find by looking at the true address that the links goes to eg www.imatheavingscumbagwholivesinafrica.com.

As said above its best to never click on a link in an e.mail, even if you think it's genuine, it's just not how it should be done, if you know who it's from and know they are safe just go direct to their own website using the web address you already use and know is safe.

If only everyone know just how risky the internet actually is it would be a much safer place. Than it is.

Just because I am paranoid does not mean they are not out to get me ;)

Exactly right.

It's like the advice I was given when I was learning to drive: When you want to get out of the car, always switch the engine off and lock the door. Don't try to judge whether or not it's safe to get out and leave the engine running, because sooner or later you'll make a mistake. Get the habit ingrained and you'll be OK.

If you are unsure with these things you could look at the Full Header which give loads of computery type information but will also show the "return header." If it is fake, it will be unlike the original and usually obvious.

Personally I would never purchase anything from a camera retailer sounding like a burger fast food chain.

I've also just updated my server so I need you all to PM me with your name, e-mail address, home address, card number and CV2 number. Thanks in advance.

Never used Camera King. Email from "Camera King" arrived in one of my spam folders today headed up Password Reset. I deleted it without opening.

I've used them via Amazon with no problems. References to the rogue Camera King, which was US based, seem to have vanished on Google searches.

I'm getting bombarded by emails inviting me to validate my account via a link, mostly from 'PayPal' (I have an account with them but I never use it), from 'Apple' (I have no Apple devices therefore no account) and from a bank I've never had an account with, so this could be similar. Don't take any chances - bin it.

I have used them a fair bit via Amazon or direct from their own website, never had a problem with them.

The Camera King e-mail is genuine.

But always best to find your own way to any site rather than follow a link from an e-mail

This is all a bit peculiar, from what Jannyfox says it seems possible that they have been at least partially hacked. Several of us have had dealings with them via Amazon and had no problem, I haven't had any emails from them or the people who purport to be them. It might be worth dropping them an email, via their contacts page, to enquire if it's them. If it is they are doing themselves damage and you could request they stop, if it's not then an innocent business is being needlessly damaged.

Also used them via Amazon with no problems whatsoever. Haven't received an email though. Yet!

I have used CameraKing and got the same email. I used them for 3rd party batteries I think! I never used the link and didn't update my password. If I need to use them again, that's when I will update, if they don't want the business, fine!
