Camera insurance

Do you have home and contents insurance? I managed to destroy my gear last year and my insurer paid out in full (More Than). I'd declared the more expensive kit and paid for accidental damage outside of home, it doesn't cost much more. Didn't even increase this year's premium

I have this on mine but it's only covered up to £1500 per item so if you have say a D5 it'll be itemised and will hike up the premium.

I've taken out supplementary insurance too. All the items are listed with copies of invoices provided to the insurer to cover all risks in any country. Did cost a bit more but less than a standalone policy.

Lucky you. My home insurers said the premium would increase so I didnt claim as the cost of the repair was not great so used my travel insurers instead. However, I suggest your home insurance first before taking out specialist insurance.

I cover on home insurance too. I'm think of getting specific photography insurance to keep it from hiking the home insurance if I did ever claim. Also I'm at the maximum for my home insurance policy, the next policy up takes it into specific insurance level costs. One thing with most home insurance policies is you can't sell images without invalidating the policy cover.

I use Kamkit ,not made a claim yet so cant vouch for the service ,but i found them very competitive when searching to get my gear covered

Mine kit is covered in my home/,contents policy with direct line. Can't remember the policy names exactly but I upgraded from home the highest standard cover. It included single items away from home max value £5k

I've recently gone through this exercise and found as an amateur it's cheaper to add to home insurance than buy specialist insurance. It got qite scary when I added up the replacement cost of my gear on a new for old. One thing to watch out for is the 'high risk item' limit. Even if your most expensive bit of kit falls withih the individual piece of kit cost, I found there was an aggregate limit for high risk items that counts even it it's not outdoors - basically things that might get nicked in a burglary or you would lose in a house fire- laptops, tablets, mobile phones, camera kit, jewellry, playstations, etc and this aggregate limit was often down at £5k on a standard policy. It didn't add much to the policy to hike that up considerably but check it out before taking on insurance. I ended up with Halifax Home Insurance as their web site was nice and easy to understand and see where cost came in when I hiked limits and they were reasonably competitive- insurance is one of those things that you really have to get the right cover not the lowest cost cover as loss adjusters will just point to the restrictions- imagine how frustrated you'd feel for having saved £50 at renewal only to then find you aren't covered for what you thought you were after losing everything in a fire.
