I've recently gone through this exercise and found as an amateur it's cheaper to add to home insurance than buy specialist insurance. It got qite scary when I added up the replacement cost of my gear on a new for old. One thing to watch out for is the 'high risk item' limit. Even if your most expensive bit of kit falls withih the individual piece of kit cost, I found there was an aggregate limit for high risk items that counts even it it's not outdoors - basically things that might get nicked in a burglary or you would lose in a house fire- laptops, tablets, mobile phones, camera kit, jewellry, playstations, etc and this aggregate limit was often down at £5k on a standard policy. It didn't add much to the policy to hike that up considerably but check it out before taking on insurance. I ended up with Halifax Home Insurance as their web site was nice and easy to understand and see where cost came in when I hiked limits and they were reasonably competitive- insurance is one of those things that you really have to get the right cover not the lowest cost cover as loss adjusters will just point to the restrictions- imagine how frustrated you'd feel for having saved £50 at renewal only to then find you aren't covered for what you thought you were after losing everything in a fire.
