I was told when visiting a camera shop the other day that I would have to look elsewhere for camera theft insurance if I purchase a camera from them.

I am buying a new DSLR camera and wonder if anyone reading this could advise me where I could camera theft insurance for my new camera at a reasonable price?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thank you.

E&L insurance - they also cover theft from an unattended vehicle.
Monthly rolling contract as well - about £7 a month for £3500 cover including public liability - works for me - not had to claim yet though so can't say what they are like when you really need them:thinking:

Thank you for your prompt reply, Jules.

Does that theft insurance cover when I am out and about with my camera and its lenses (i.e. not just when the camera and lenses are at home)?

So for about £7 a month I could get theft cover not just for my camera but for other items too?

I see that there is a free quote section in the camera section of the E and L website.

I have my camera gear insured under my household policy ((& yes, it covers me whilst out & about).

Glover and Howe here

£32 pa for £1000 of cover - one claim for £500 last year

That's good - it covers your camera equipment when you are out.

Check on whether or not your insurance company requires you to 'specify' the item(s) and that cover for 'away from home' is sufficient to cover all that you will have you at any one time.

Be careful when looking at home theft cover from the specialist insurers, you will probably find that the small print includes clauses stating that your windows and doors have to meet a minimum standard, obviously if they don't meet the required standard then you're not covered if someone breaks in and steals your kit.

No they don't. Read the small print. Well, actually they do. But only if you drive a car without central locking and the boot can't be accessed from inside the car. So a MKII Jag is covered. But not a £56K Range Rover. :cuckoo::cuckoo:
Absolute madness. I found out by talking to them for half an hour. In the end the guy admitted that most modern cars aren't covered. :bang::bang:
I cancelled my policy immediately.Absolute shower of ****
Have a read of your policy. You may be shocked.

Thank you for your reply darkman. I shall have to arrange cover for camera theft straight after purchasing the new camera.

Also note most insuarance policies dont cover electrical failure.

Waste of time if you ask me.

So I could end up paying for insurance which covers my Nikon DSLR camera but which might not be of any use if the camera electrical system fails?

I am informed that Nikon DSLR cameras come with a two year guarantee - which I assume may cover repairs of any electrical fault.

I think it is important to try to get camera insurance to cover theft of the camera and/or its lenses - cover which includes for those times when I am out and about with my camera equipment.

I've got a policy with Photoguard which is reasonable price for the cover level and I had a look at Aaduki the other week to see what their cover was like as I wanted the wifes kit separate to mine.
Have a check on the T&C's with E&L. I had a policy out for my gear last year which is about due for renewel, but the excess was something like 8% meaning I'd end up with over £800 to pay, while the excess with photoguard is voluntary (I took £250) and will lower your price. Photoguard also cover theft from vehicle, as long as it's got a factory fitted alarm and immobiliser.

Yep.
My d700 had a total electrical failure a few weeks back. I'm not insured but I checked out a few companies just to see if I would have been covered, and I wouldn't. Photo guard being one I looked at.
Total repair costs were in the region of £700.
Thankfully Nikon covered it even though the camera is out of warranty.

I've found www.cliik.co.uk to be the best of the bunch... Give Steve Beveridge a ring and he'll sort out a policy that suits your needs. Tell him you got the info from Talk Photography too! :)

I have £10k worth of kit covered for ALL RISKS (including theft from an unattended vehicle even after 9pm), £5m public liability insurance and professional indemnity insurance for around than £300.
