Who's the best for Camera Insurance?

Don't have any. Never had, but thinking I should.

Be interested in the responses and hearing about who to avoid.
Always seem to hear stories of insurance companies wriggling to avois paying out.

I use photoguard.co.uk, they seem to be very good although I've not had to claim yet - the one time I had my compact stolen, I'd forgotten to renew my insurance, sigh. They insure for kit in cars as well, and I believe they also do public liability and pro insurance too :)

I use PhotoGuard
they also do 3rd party cover
and you can do it all online!

I use photoguard.
about 3 years now
not really cheap but pretty good
read the small print about car cover and hatchbacks.
it's gone up this year as all photo equipment has risen in price :(

the online facility is good and I've claimed twice in 3 years
pretty good both times.
the last time, canon 1.4 50mm I didn't have enough cover....well I did for internet prices which is where I buy.
so I bought from one stop digital. sent them the receipt and got a cheque in the post 2 days later.
pretty good if you ask me
think for all the kit below it was about 96 notes for a renewel...ish. UK only, including car cover

I did have policy with E & L payed monthly Direct Debit, changed my equipment , emailed them twice to change details but got no reply! So stopped DD and that got em writing to me ! Have now cancelled this could all happen with a claim!!

I'm a Photguard user too, all done online, minimal fuss.

I'm covered by house insurance, but due to the huge rise in RRP on lens I had to put my 70-200 2.8 IS down as a separate item which was an extra £23 for the year, works out at 10% of the RRP.

I had a policy with E&L as well... they doubled my premium for no apparent reason and when I called to cancel the policy they offered to reduce it back to what it was. On that basis I would advise caution!
Now have included all kit on house insurance: anything over 2k with esure has to be listed separately so it costs extra but, in my investigations, not as much as an individual policy.

How do these places work with secondhand kit?

All of my gear bar my 40d and 70-200 are all used items bought from private sales. Do i just insure these as if i bought them new? ie value them at new replacment costs?

Do you have to provide reciepts etc? being private sales etc i never got one :(

proof of ownership can be a photo of the item if i remember rightly. its all on the t&c's on the website..

from photoguard.co.uk

Evidence of ownership - to pay out for an insurance claim, we need to be certain that you were/are the owner of the insured items. Evidence can be shown by, for example, an original receipt clearly showing the item and date of purchase. Alternative evidence can include a bank or credit card statement, photographs, a copy receipt from the retailer, packaging or literature.

Ah good stuff ill maybe have a look into it.

Recently whilst out hiking or fishing ive had a couple of slips which could have resulted in damage so its got me thinking its only a matter of time lol. Id be worried that this sort of stuff wouldnt be covered should it happen! All the "reasonable care" etc stuff seems like its open to massive intepretation.

I use my household insurance, which also covers away from home and accidental damage - don't think it increased my premium by much, if any.

I am using E&L at the moment and seems reasonable. I went to a specific equipment insurer after hearing stories of house insurance excluding photographic equipment. When I checked my own house insurance I had no cover for photographic equipment in or out of the home, even though I pay extra to cover items taken from the home.

I guess you really only find out how good any company is when you need to make a claim.

My vote goes to Glover and Howe. Been with them for about 4 years now and had to make a claim 2 year back for my camera, lens and flash that had been stolen. Once I had got all my paperwork sorted and police ref number within 2 days their suppliers were sending me replacements. Great service and good bunch of people to deal with when things go bad.

i use the same having been through e&L and photogaurd. Glover and howe have great customer service

I've used Photoguard up until this year - they are very good for Amature and starter semi-pro cover especially if you don't have a lot of expensive stuff. They don't have any excess to pay (you just can't claim if value of loss is under £100) which is good if you only have basic kit - you do pay for this though and gets quite expensive the more kit you have.

I used them for 2 years and made a claim during year 1 which was very successfully handled - there is a review in the reviews section if anyone is interested.

I now use Photo-shield (winsover-howden) and for the same price as I was being quoted by photoguard for my renewal I got more alot more cover (albeit with a small £150 excess)

Thanks everybody......have taken out cover with Photoguard..

Peace of mind now when I go out

Does that cover taking it out of the house/garden?

Mine did (Nationwide BS). Had an accident earlier this year, slipped walking on a tidal estuary and wrote off my 30D and got my sigma 500 water damaged. They replaced the camera immediately and then sorted out the lens repair. Faultless service!

That's insurance companies - lend you an umbrella when it's not raining.
