I'm currently looking for insurance for my kit, a lot of it has been bought second hand or grey market. I messaged photoguard and they seem to insure it but was a little confused as to their requirements for proof of ownership and since their not open to phone and clarify till tomorrow I thought I'd see if anyone had any recommendations.

Camera body is £1400 new in the shops over here but I bought it second hand and was orginally an import. Most of my lens while having a significant new retail price I bought off eBay etc.

Just want to make sure their all covered but unsure as to whether I value them average second hand price, grey import price or uk retail price?

I know theirs more than just photo guard and if anyone can recommend any other preferred companies I'm all ears.

I'm with Cliik who didnt have a problem with my having various bits of second hand kit - its academic because you insure for the reinstatement value ie the cost of replacing the kit as new

Photoguard are a bit of a nightmare with used gear. Towergate are good but expensive. You will have to insure the equipment for the u.k replacement value with them though.

i`m with Photoguard...why are they a nighmare with used gear?

I chose them too - was looking for public liability insurance and professional indemnity and this was a bonus. No idea what they're like for paying out though and next year's premiums as I've had a couple of laptops go and not claimed.

Good piece of mind though as if I'm taking £2k's worth of equipment out and it's nicked from the car or broken if I fall down into a ravine I assume they will pay without much trouble.

word is they re good on dealing with claims - there are a few people here who've claimed with them and have positive things to say

@itsdavedotnet was one

It was more the proving ownership of second hand goods they were a bit confusing about in their reply, just worried if anything was to happen whether a private receipt from a second hand sale would be good enough for them? Although I do have the original purchase receipts in previous owners name.

The bits I've bought off eBay aren't such a worry as from what they said the eBay receipt would be adequate.

So am i right in understanding no matter what I paid second hand or grey import I'm to value the items at UK retail value and not the actual amount I paid?

Photoguard are the most expensive I have found... cliik dont care what your equipment is.. just that you own it.. and as said its replace value not bought value :)

Just been having a look on their website and going to give them a ring for a quote some point tommorrow.

Hopefully they'll be able to insure for the kit in my van too as according to photo guard it wouldn't be insured as I'm able to walk through from the front seats to the cargo area.

I just use the home insurance. Hiscox has proven to be very good. Both my private and business equipment covered. And nice high individual items. My lenses were bought second hand and had no issue get them replaced old for new. They weren't even interested in my receipts. The loss insurer was mainly interested in my lifestyle, where I lived and whether the value of the equipment was in keep with our general other lifestyle.

I honestly wouldn't bother with specialist insurance unless you have very specialist needs.

although its worth noting that 99% of home insurers won't cover you for business purposes (that is they might cover your business equipment in the house, but they won't cover it while you are actually conducting business) - seems hiscox are an exception
