What insurance do people on here have for their camera gear when out and about and stored in the car?

I am going to renew mine today but plan on looking elsewhere than E&L first to see what's on offer.

I can't recommend a specialist company, but I do know that even if they do offer cover for this the conditions I have read say that it must be out of site and not reachable by breaking a window on the vehicle.
Having had camera gear stolen from my car I managed to claim successfully on my household insurance with the Nationwide.
Since then I have bought some small padlocks that go through the camera bag zip slider(?) and a security wire and padlock all in one type that are sold for bicycle security. The bike lock goes through a strong point in the car and through the padlock eyes on the zip and through the handles on the camera bag. I know it doesn't offer complete security but it will (I hope) stop a quick smash and grab thief.
Even though I was insured by the time I had paid the excess and forgot all the small items that one collects over the years, I reckon it still cost me close to £500!!

You probably don't need specialist insurance unless you're a professional or, at least, earning money from photography. Most householder's policies offer an all risks extension that covers 'stuff' (cameras, sports gear, watches, jewellery, clothing and so on) that is routinely taken out of the home. You may have to provide particulars of any single item with a replacement value over a certain amount, and this varies between insurers. Check the terms and conditions of cover for exemptions and particular security requirements, such as locking camera gear in the boot if the vehicle's unattended.

I had a policy with E&L but after reading through their T&C's and finding they had an 8% excess I decided to look elsewhere as the excess for a total loss would of been nearly £1000.

I did a search and went for Photoguard. They aren't the cheapest but they do have some major benefits. I have an excess of £50 now, but that's after a claim, and you can have Zero excess if you want. They cover in vehicle, even when unattended, and when you're travelling and you can get Public Liability added on if neccessary. I have around £10,000 cover for around £330 a year, and that's after a claim, and the claim process is easy and swift.

CLIIK works well for me :)

Photoguard for me as well, but I've never had to claim yet. Good all round cover.

Thanks guys, will investigate all these options right away.

All signed up with Photoguard.
Thanks guys, appreciate the time and advice. :)

I tried to claim a year approximately a year a go and cliik were very poor with terrible customer service and they made things very difficult and stressfull with my claim. Not very understanding at all about the whole situation. Fortunately their underwriters were very good and used common sense in the end to resolve my issues.
