Hi guys,

a lot of my photos get posted to my instagram. When at car shows/motorsport events I quite often use my phone for close up shots as the resolution/layout works better to upload straight to instagram.

I know this is a waste of a DSLR camera and was wondering if there is a setting on a camera which allows you to preview the image in a 4 x 5 crop format? (I'm using a Canon 60D) I know theirs the grid but that only works well for 1 x 1?

In the past I have held my DSLR in portrait position and stood quite far back to make sure there is enough room to crop to 4 x 5 in photoshop but this often results in the image being out of focus.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Beav

Surely the image was already out of focus and that fact was more pronounced after the crop (assuming you cropped both vertical & horizontal) as you then have a tendency to view 'zoomed in'

Surely the bigger issue is why are you photos usually out of focus if you move backwards to get a bigger view.

fix this then crop in post

Might be missing focus as I'm stood too far back it's finding it hard to focus on a smaller object further away with a wide angle lens (10-20m sigma)?

the image is possibly being stretch or compressed due to the aspect ratio. as has been said do it in post and take the image with room to crop
Surely a crop is just trimming the original image to fit an overlayed rectangle. Stretch and compression would only occur if the OP was draging the original image to a 4 to 5 ratio as happens when manipluating an image in power point to fit a slide or with in a slide

Just wondered if there was a guide on screen to help me frame the photo knowing it's going to be used at 4:5 I'm zooming out quite far and it's probably me missing focus maybe on the car?

Display the 1x1 grid as 4x5 (or 5x4) is only a bit extra space on the right, left or both (top, bottom or both) to crop. No need to zoom out 'quite far'. All you need is to take a couple of shots, check the crop in PS and repeat a few times till you guess right.

4x5 is an option in my processing software (PS CS5) and may be in others too and if so maybe it'll be possible to apply this and batch process?

I agree about looking into the out of focus pictures issue as this isn't a cropping issue.

Yup I do all that in Photoshop it's just making sure I leave enough room when taking the photo. I find I miss the focus a lot though when using the 10-20mm and trying to allow enough room in the photo for the 4:5 crop

An example of the extra needed to crop 4x5 compared to 1x1.

As you can see there is not a lot extra image required.

Ile use the 1 X 1 guide :)

Need to use my 18-50mm f2.8 sigma really for indoor car shows rather than the 10-20mm 4/5.6 ( for the f2.8) but I find 18mm isn't wide enough on my drop 60D for indoor stuff usually
