Camera for video / vlogging

Hi folks, I hope all is well

I’ve been getting more into video using my DJI Osmo 5 and nano. I’ve used these primarily for out and about video, action videos on the Mtb and for safety on the road with my bike.

I’m going to start doing more video for work (unrelated to photography) which will be talking head type shots sat down explaining certain aspects of things we deal with.

I’m looking at possibly opening a YouTube channel to host said videos (not looking to become a YouTube star).

So I’ve been looking at upgrade options for video.

I’m torn between buying a cheaper vlogging type camera like a Canon power shot v1 or getting say a Z6iii. I’m drawn to the smaller size of the compact type cameras.

Anyone here do similar in their line of work or run a YouTube channel. What cameras would you recommend?

How about a Lumix S9? Seems to be highly rated for that type of work, and can be had for a good price now.
 
z6iii or zr might be perfect if you have some faster glass already. Pretty much any full frame mirrrorless post-2020 should do the talking head videos very easily. You don't even care about rolling shutter, only very good auto track AF and obviously clean 4k at something like ISO800; probably not even any need for LOG if your lighting is spot on,

There is a case for 2 bodies with different compositions or a tighter framing - so you can go between A and B view. You can always do that later, or if you have 6k - just crop in as neeeded
 
Have considered using your phone assuming have a decent iPhone or an android one.

A lot of YTers start with their phones and some continue using just their phones even ones with millions of subscribers.

What is it that you might be shooting that requires a FF setup?

I have a Z8 and 24-120 F4, 85 F1.8 and 70-200 F2.8.

So I guess I'd need a wider faster prime lens for it? Like. 35 or something.

If OM system release a camera with good video I have plenty of lenses there lol

I'd just want to keep it basic for now. Whilst I have learned a bit grading the D- Log footage from the DJI stuff, I'm no expert. I have the basic Davinci software but may look at final cut also.

I have a 16 Pro Max so could look at that I guess.

I have the Osmo action 4, action 5 pro and the nano

My wife has 16 pro. Have used it a fair bit myself for videos of family and kids.
Works pretty well to be honest.

You can even hook it up to things like external mics, recorders etc. It's pretty capable.

I can think of reasons to get a FF setup and you already have Z8 which is also very capable video camera.

I don't think you need any more gear right now to get started.

Of course if all that money is burning a hole in your pockets, I'll gladly take it off you to relieve the burden

Won't be me that pays for it, will be the LTD company.

My cameras are my personal items. Happy to use them for work if company wants to pay me for them lol

Have a look at the DJI Osmo pocket 3 it seems to be used quite a lot of the guys and girls that do a lot of talking head type videos for Youtube and social media. The creator combo is good value as it comes with the extended battery and the wireless mic etc.

I have a mate who has a ton of high end video gear including Black Magic, Venice etc and he often uses the Osmo pocket 3 for these sort of jobs.

I also have one myself but hardly use it to it's full capability, just used for car stuff. I believe the new model is about to launch soon as well

Z8 is perfect. Add 35 or 50mm prime depending on your space and you are all set

Resolve is the way to go. Dont be bother with fcp or premiere pro unless you love to pay £800 to adobe.

Will need to talk to the accountant regarding using my Z8 and the company - hence I was thinking of the company getting its own dedicated set up
 
G9ii is a great camera (I had a G9, GX9 and S1, S5, S5ii).

But the AF was terrible for action and the OM stuff is miles ahead for macro. Hence I sold it all and switched to OM and Z8.

I've no issues with the G9ii myself.

I'm.secretly hoping that OM bring something out with great video...if not I will look at something else.

I'd have an S9 but just can't bring myself to buy back into Lumix even if it would just be a video rig sat on a desk.

possibly a camcorder may be a better option for video?

Panasonic HC-X1500 (updated to new 1600) with extra handle and Azden SMX-30v microphone on handle remote stop/start/zoom and dongle for wireless sound via bluetooth dongle in audeo output port

yes this is the lower end of professional camcorders. There is a huge difference between that one and a consumer camcorders. For example i did have the Sony AX53 camcorder it is more like a cheap point and shoot camera in comparison with very little human input control. soon got rid of it for that reason.
I am not saying the one I have is easy to get to grips with but when even only half mastered the difference is obvious.
the spec alone will blow your mind. broadcastvideos with no extra gear niot that i have tried it


first thing noticed is longer battery life - zoom control without changing lenses built in ND filters LED light in the handle save carting around seperatle lighing.

editing still avalable with something like Adobe premier editing suit for colour grading etc. on top of the is getting a decent microphone . here I can point in what to get as well with good tips thrown in
