Seems like the best place to ask for an informed opinion ;) :D

I am about to buy my fiance a new camera and she has fallen in love wih this offering from fujifilm

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=320066701931&rd=1&rd=1

What i would like is your general opinions on this one please  ....... but before that i am going to say this .....

What she wants is a GOOD not too technical camera to come to terms with over the next year or so and she DOESNT want an SLR :cuckoo: but would rather have an SLR looking camera like this that can have basic "bolt-on" accessories bought for it like lenses etc etc at a cheap price :D

Now i know that she can get a technically higher spec "point and shoot" camera for the same or less money but she likes the chunky look and is of the opinion that a bulkier camera in theory should be tougher in real terms (she cant stand dainty in any shape or form) :nono: , this could also come in handy as the plan is that after a year this camera will be handed down to my 11 year old son if the Mrs decides to upgrade to an SLR ;)

Your informed opinions are as always eagerly awaited and highly valued :D

Thats a fine camera! However, you may be able to get it cheaper from argos.

Its not an SLR as the title states,... Its a pro-sumer camera.

My brother has this camera, its an excellent camera to start out with I think.
He bought it at the same time I got my DSLR and when Ive set up shoots for my comps, he often comes along and shoots alongside me, getting lovely skintones & well saturated colours (he doesnt really use PS).
Ive really watched his confidence really grow through this camera.
The camera also has a the useful little option of compostion grid for landscape shots.

Well i knew about pcworld and argos having them but guess what?........... both have been sold out for the last 3 days and dont expect to get new stock in again.

I think that Nikki will now end up buying it either from Amazon or fleabay but by the sounds of it and having done a quick scan through the article in the link above i am quite happy that this camera is well suited to her needs :D

Many thanks to all who have replied :D :D will let you know the final outcome as and when ;)

my friend owns this i think, and from what i could see theres quite alot of noise in the photos, and he got some really over-vivd strange colors, but i think that might've just been the options he was using.

i might warn you its quite conciderabley smaller than a dslr, if thats a problem, as my friend didn't realise how small it was in comparision to my old d50 it was until it came.

The Fuji's are great. I started out with the S7000 and came on from there.
I think lots of us did! :)

yep, I still have my S7000....I learnt that camera inside out! I loved my FuFu

lofty i managed to get one of these fuji 5600 from argos just before xmas, i can honestly say your girlfriend will not be dissapointed with this camera, it has some great features and also takes some nice photo's, i don't normally like small camera's (find them hard to handle) but this seems to sit in yours hand's perfect, it really is like a mini DSLR, another added bonus is it also shoots in RAW.

PS. if you manage to get hold of one of these camera's, try and get a copy of computer active issue no 230, there is a voucher in there from fuji, if you send of a copy of the receipt for your camera, they will send you a free 256mb xd card.

I have an S5100, which is basically the 4mpx variety of the same camera.

Its a great camera and for me, its the last step before moving onto DSLR as I find a couple of things about it to be slightly annoying.

1. Manual focus. You need to press TWO buttons at once to get it to do it, and its slow.
2. Fujinon lens no good for really tight macro stuff.
3. Flash - next to useless beyond a few metres. No hotshoe connectivity.
4. Fuji RAW format isn't supported by RSE.
5. xD cards are relatively expensive, and is the only format which multi card readers tend to not support. Readers are available though.

That's about it. I'd recommend leaving the 55mm adapter ring on permanently with a UV filter to protect the lens (not just the front of the lens - the whole thing slides out when you switch it on and it looks a little 'flimsy'.

Camera takes 4x batteries, and I'd expect to get about 200 shots out of a set of 2500mAh without recharging.

I replaced my Fuji A204 with an S5100 and its not a move I've ever regretted, although through time I feel I've outgrown it a little, now.

I have recommended this to a number of friends who enjoy photography and they all love it. I've not had one complains back yet.

OK, had one - that was that it got one friend so hooked she bought a 400D and is not getting a 580EX and a 70-200 F4 IS!!!

Well it should arrive this week so i'll let you know my opinion on it and what Nikki thinks of it too ;) :D

Many thanks for all the replies so far ......... they have really put both my mind and Nikki's at ease with this purchase :D

Well it's arrived and we have both been having a little playtime with it (the camera) :naughty:

I have to say that so far i am as impressed with it as Nikki is  but in all fairness it's not been exactly good conditions down here recently for outdoor photo's what with all the bad weather bwe've been suffering of late :'( however she has been playing around with it indoors and the results so far seem quite good :D

I will post up some pics in the relevent area's as soon as i get the time and we'll see what you all think ;).

Another thing is that i am pleasently surprised at how small it is ...... she wont need to lug around a great big camera bag for it :D

Well thanks for all the help and advice guys ......... it's the friendly manner of the members and willingness to help others makes this forum top's in my opinion
