Hi guys, ive posted a few items recently about my forthcoming trip to South Africa where I am getting married. We want a camera that will take good photos on the day, our safari experience and while we are out and about. The basic requirement is to take decent photos of which (hopefully) some can be used to make canvas prints.

Im aware that I need something with a decent zoom when out on Safari. Having originally looked and the Nikon D40/ D50 I posted on here and read some posts I decided that a bridge camera might be better and had almost pressed the buy button on a fuji HS20EXR (£200).

This week, ive been offered a deal on a Canon EOS 1000D/ Rebel with both 18-55 & 75-300 for £300

It looks to be something to very much consider but could really do with some more educated views on whether it is a better option for the extra £100?

Thanks as always

Is £300 the max budget then? Tbh the 75-300 canons are pretty awful.

Also, I see that the Panasonic FZ45 reviews very well in the bridge camera section. The only thing it lacks is potential zoom but when combined with a 1.7 telephoto lens it has the largest zoom and still comes in for around £300? Anyone got experience with this camera and advise on the cameras suggested?

Many thanks

Yeah, I would say £300 is the max to be honest. Im not really a photography guy but want something good to record our trip. I have no doubt that anything will be an upgrade on what im used to but want to get the best for my money if poss.

That was my original plan when looking at the DSLR as they tend to hold their value very well against the bridge cameras so I thought about buying a Nikon D40/ D50 then selling it after we return. I then thought about the hassle of taking a DSLR with multiple lenses and possibly creating issues around security/ theft.

i kind of settled on the Fuji HS20EXR as it seemed to have a great zoom and offered good resolution. It came in at £200 so at that money was prob worth keeping as a good all round camera.

I saw the offer on the Canon and thought it might be a good option as it offered good mp and the 300mm lens etc so prob could be sold for as much as I paid for it. If its not as good then maybe its not worth going for I guess. Just wanted to get people's input as you guys are a lot more knowledgeable than me! (understatement!)

Did look at hiring but we are away for 3 weeks in April and then have a return party mid May so for hiring for almost 4 weeks would cost horrendously more than buying!

Hi Greig. I'm just back from honeymoon/safari in kenya and only had a 300mm lens with me. Found it only just about long enough but if i was going back i would definitely be investing in something longer, 400 at least or even 500. And this is on a d5100 with a cropped sensor. Had to heavily crop a lot of the photos of smaller animals and birds.

Thanks Phil. That is really handy to know. I think im dismissing the Canon now anyway as it doesnt seem to be highly rated. Think I may go for the Fuji HS20EXR!
