I dont really use my camera much anymore so I’ve been letting my lad use it. He has a pretty good eye and has said he wants his own set up. With his 18th coming up we are looking for ideas. The technology has really changed since I last signed on here so i am not sure what to go for. It appears DSLRs have been replaced by mirrorless. Is that true?
He is good with landscapes and wildlife, but his real passion is aircraft and rockets. He recently took my 7d + 100-400 lens to Texas to shoot the last spacex starship launch and has come home with some pretty good images.

We have set a budget of £1000. Are there any good resources i can go to? Or better still Are there any cameras you can recommend?

Yes, mirrorless has replaced DSLRs although they remain capable of taking great photos and are great value used.

Are you looking to buy used or new? And how much Canon gear do you have? Is that the 100-400 mark I or II?
 
looks as if your son is more interested in distance shots . Therefore longer lenses may suit better.. To this end maybe a micro four thirds camera may suit better as for example a 100mm MFT lens =200 mm full frame lens.

my personal choice is panasonic and now thinking of the G9. plenty used in good condition under £500 . then allows for a decent lens mm length such as the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 100-300mm f/4-5.6 II Power O.I.S. Lens. = 200-600mmin Full frame terms

so you will have a decent panasonic G9 camera and a long lens for under your price bracket and added bonus of having image stablisation in the camera and another in the lens working in conjunction with each other. I actually have both which is why I think this will suit your son best and not as heavy as a full frame camera setup

this is what he would be getting , This is my Panasonic G9 with that 100-300mm lens. If I was getting his as a pressie I would be over the moon with it. Ideal for plane photography etc

Canon M5 or M6ii, with the EF-M adapter. The adapter allows the use of any EF or EF S lens, so a plethora to choose from. (y)

Canon R50 with EF to RF adapter would be more future proof for not much more.
 
Gawd. I think a shop visit is needed…

I have a 7d with 50mm, sigma 10-20, 24-105 and the 100-400.

He likes the 100-400, but it was heavy to lug aroun kennedy space centre this summer.
 
If he's getting those lenses I'd go for a full frame mirrorless (with the exception of the 10-20). If you go used might be able to squeeze in a R8.

We went up to Wex in Manchester today. They gave us a full tutorial on the current tech and demonstrated a host of bodies and lenses. I think we were there for over 2 hours. We ended up raising the budget and will probably go with a sony A6700. It was more affordable than the canon range and the test shots were pretty impressive. We did start with the canon R7 but the longer sony lenses were light as a feather in comparison.

I was a little gutted to see all my old kit for sale for pennies though.
 
The A6700 is excellent and there’s a ton of excellent lenses that pair perfectly with it (particularly the 70-350).

Another good reason to look at M43.

I sold nearly all my Canon dSLRs and lenses nearly 4 years ago now and went with Panasonic M43, and recently gave my Canon FF to my daughter when I discovered how good the low light results were from the G9.

The G9 and either a100-300 Mk 2 or a 100-400 can give good results hand held down to 1/15s with the dual stabilisation.

The G9 is extremely customisable, with a host of features that would suit him. (look at what is said on youtube etc)

With 3 lenses, you can go from 14mm to 800mm (FF eq) and fit it all plus bits and pieces in a smallish back pack.

I have 3 FF cameras but still get the most enjoyment from my a6700, you can just grab it and go. Light, portable and you can just hold it all day long. I have mine paired with the 16mm, 23mm and 56mm f1.4 contemporary lenses, these give me a FF view akin to 23mm, 35mm and 85mm. All ideal for street photography. You should find some good mid-long tele zooms your lad would be happy with.
