as part of his work my son needs a camera that is good for head and shoulders shots - hand help

I reckon one of these m4/3 would do the job as well as a DSLR

(presumably 75mm or 100mm equivalent lens?)

any recomendations please?

Any camera will certainly do the job, provided pairs with the relevant lens. Is there a budget?

M4/3 will be fine, lens wise the Holy Grail lens for M4/3 is the Noctiron 42.5

http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2014/...a-nocticron-42-5-f1-2-lens-review-comparison/

However remember your focal length doubles for M4/3 so the Nocto above is equiv to a FF 85mm, i couldn't afford it so i used the Cheap 45mm F1.8 Zuiko so 90mm equiv FF

But why not get him a Lumix FZ1000 great camera does it all... just been replaced by FZ2500, or are you wanting better DOF and more subject isolation.

85mm seems the sweet spot for most portraiture work, with all the big vendors releasing 85s like the
Batis
Mulvis
Sigmas new 85mm 1.4
Nikons new 85mm f1.4
Sonys 85mm G Master

etc

I have an Oly and a Panasonic M4/3 - the early models and a Nikon 1 ...... I've looked through all my images and I have hardly taken a head shot with them ...... taken most with my Nikon DSLR and some with a Canon S95

The Nikon J5 looks good with the kit lens the 10mm 30mm - OK the sensor is smaller than M4/3 ..... but it seems to get good reviews

I’d suggest Canon 700D. Relevant lens would do the job!

£300-500 should get you a nice body and lens especially if you're willing to buy used and if the main point is head and shoulders shots you could always go for an adapter and a manual 50mm f1.4 or f1.8, just to be different and add some character.

I have a GX7 and a G7 and they're good cameras but with two provisos, firstly the GX7's EVF isn't to everyones taste and I'd recommend trying before buying and secondly some MFT body and lens combinations suffer shutter shock and therefore I think that anyone thinking of buying into MFT should think carefully about body and lens selection. Personally I will no longer recommend Panasonic cameras and lenses affected by shutter shock unless the prospective buyer goes into this well informed and able to make an informed decision.

Budget would get him used EM5 or EM10 plus the 45mm/1.8 which is a cracking lens.
Otherwise, any of the APSC DSLRs plus a 50mm prime would do equally well.

Just had a thought... I think that any younger people just getting into photography should take a good look at mirrorless rather than traditional SLR's/DSLR's as IMO it's the future and also possibly more video friendly.

Thanks Guys .. I will go through the options with him

He will buy new as it is a company purchase and they will get the VAT back and will want a guarantee ... I also do not think that they should spend more than £300 as it is not necessary ......

As has been said almost any camera these days will do the job ... I think that it is a matter of physical size ....... although the best IQ may be APSC with 50mm, I think that indoors at what may be lower shutter speeds would be better .. I also reckon that they would find a DSLR just a little too big, although the current APSC bodies are smaller than they used to be

I also think that it would not bother him if it just had a flip screen and no VF as today they are all used to using their phones ........ Ive always been a Nikon fan so I will include the J5 on the list and the Canon Powershot

I will give him a list and tell him to go to Curry's or similar as I think that it is important that they are comfortable with the size of the camera ....... he will be tempted just to buy from the internet without handling the camera

All the images will be taken as jpeg and probably on the auto setting which brings up a portrait function, although he used PS I would think that it is better to get good OOC jpegs that need little work

So many good compacts around that I think convenience will be the main factor

Just be mindful that the J5 doesn't come with an EVF, and if hes working outdoors in the SUN looking at a rear screen isn't great... Id always get something with a VF

Nikon D3300 with kit lens would be a good option, excellent IQ and uses similar/same sensor like the D7200, but lacks the controls, AF tracking and points etc.. of the D7200...... I had one as a lightweight going out camera but found the buttons a little too small for my shovels.

I'm wondering if this is for taking pictures for Company ID cards, or maybe snaps for the intranet? If so, pretty much any camera would do as the output is likely to be about an inch square and rarely looked at....,

And you don't need to buy new to get a VAT receipt and guarantee. Just buy from a dealer such as MPB.

Fuji might be a better bet for outdoors, this is a rather rare shot of an adult with its young, taken with a X-E2
