hi guys
my plan was to stick with just film for a while but i am now traveling to Dubrovnik in September and looking around for a dig camera to take with. I've had canon 5dmk111, nikon 7200, oly m4/3 which i thought was great and Sony mirrorless most recently and tbh didn't get on with Sony at all, the dr was great but for me that's it.
i have a canon 24-70 f4L at the moment to use with one of my film cameras but that's it canon eos lens wise.
i am in a bit of a dilemma weather to go newer tech with duel pixel, flippy screen etc. on 80 or m5 or go the full frame route and use my existing lens-possibly adding a 40mm pancake to go with it. what do you think?
or then again get a compact 1 inch sensor cam!

Bang for buck, and bearing in mind you can use any EF lenses you subsequently buy with your Canon EOS 35mm film cameras I'd go for a mint, low shutter-count, used 6D Mk1. It's full frame (so you'll get the same depth of field and bokeh as your 35mm film cameras, and you'll keep the 24mm end of your zoom), very good low light performance, it's fairly small and not too heavy (for a full frame DSLR), and it delivers lovely-looking photos. I have the 40mm pancake lens too, and use it quite a bit on my 6D and EOS film cameras. I think it would pair up nicely with the 24-70 for street and general purpose photos, and it won't take up much space. Once again, bang for buck it's hard to beat a mintish, used 40mm f/2.8, you should be able to find one for around the £100 - £130 mark from a reputable dealer.

You would appear to shoot mainly film so get a used Canon 5Dmk2 (£600 ish ) sell it when you get back and take the 24/70, you should not need anything else

cheers for your reply, the mk11 holds no interest for me but thanks for the idea, and reselling whatever i get after is a distinct possibility.

that was my thinking as well but the 80d seems to be cheaper than a 6d and in low light shots not sure how much difference I would see between the two?, and the new tech does appeal. i can get the 80d for around £600 or with the 18-135 for around £750 and the 6d around £700 new-grey imports. the shallow depth of field on ff is great but not the be all and end all for traveling with,
I've only got one canon eos film camera, a few fd's cameras mind and also Nikon (both auto and Manuel focus) put oly, Pentax and others! (defiantly not stuck on one make). the other poss is an m5 with a 22mm but that option is lower down my list at the moment, saying that it would make a nice compact package. as you can see arris/elbow at the moment:p

If the lens selection for the M5 was better it'd be a no brainer. As it is, I'd get the 6d, the only bit of 'new tech' it misses is the flappy screen. The Wifi is brlliant, it shoots perfectly good video too.

That said, I'm leaving behind my 6d's and just taking the M5 when travelling, with the 22, 15-45 (just in case) and an 85 1.8 on an adaptor, also the Godox TT350 and transmitter, all fits in a tiny bag.

cheers Phil, not a video person really but you never know. how good/bad is the m5 kit lens btw?

I’ve not used it.
But it’s supposed to be ‘useable’ but for me the thought of those min apertures is just odd, I’d planned to use it for landscapes and little else, but I’m not a landscape shooter.
Last years holidays were with the 6d and mostly shot 35,85,135. So the 22 and 85 will probably be all I need.

thank you, tbh i could cover most of my shots with just a 28mm or a 35mm but have more options cant harm. mind you a single prime is what i tend to do with my film cameras on a day out

I went for the M5 from a Fuji, I really wanted a 3 lens kit and Fuji needed a kidney as a swap.
The M5 was under £500, the 22mm lens wasn’t expensive either.
I’m one of the frustrated masses waiting for Canon to supply some lenses that match the 22.
A proper choice would be:
16, 22, 30, 56, 85 all at f2 or thereabouts.
Or 1.4 as a luxury option.

this is one reason i have gone back to film for now, if the 6dmk11 had more upgrades i would of been all over it but i think/hope both canon and nikon bring out a miirorless full frame soon.
now that would be nice a 16/22mm f2 combo, i did fuji with the x10, x100 and an xpro one and tbh while i loved the cameras and glass (the 14mm is stonking) the output i found a little frustrating, well with fuji's none bayer sensors anyway
