Morning (again)

An intersting observation from yesterday ... when shooting with 2 camera bodies at sports (typical 400mm and 70-200) when the action comes in the box you need to position your 400 in a way that not only allows you to shoot with the 70-200, but also isn't blocking the view from the other photographers behind you.

I noted yesterday a mixture of how folks would position their 400m ... We are behind the goal to the left hand side so to follow the action with our 70-200 we turn right ... I noted some folks would lay the 400mm over their right shoulder .. while others (me included) would hang it off their left ....

I would think that the second way perhaps gives less view to those behind (although no-one complained) ... I tried once to put the 400mm over my left while shooting and almost fell into the pit .... won't be trying that again in a hurry ..

Certainly one of the things I'm always very conscious about and infant (Sadly) I do from time to time practice different positions at home ... (okay too much information)

Thoughts?

I always used the fling it over your knee method, works far better for Nikon shooters as the tripod foot is the wrong way round compared to Canon, its not possible if youre packed in like sardines as you need a foot of space either side of you, out of courtesy to others, always remove your hood when packed in tight.

I just keep the 400 between the knees to balance and shoot with the 200 ducked down a bit under the 400. If the come and celebrate right at me I'm usually screwed though . In which case I'd rest the 400 on the advertising boards

spin..... i find it easier to spin the 400 on the monopod. usually to great amusment from the fans behind me who start telling me my camera is the wrong way around...

Wish some at my matches would use the spin method. I always seem to end up next to the guy who holds it in the crook of his arm and blocks half the goal....

I don't tend to be at matches where you are packed like sardines. Did West Ham once and never again thank you.

I will lean mine against my right thigh and trap the base of the mono with my feet.

Having said that, if it's a free kick or a corner I will often just put down on the floor which gives me freer movement with the 70-200.

I often find it useful to smack the guy on my left in the head with my 400. Often I smack myself in the head with it too. When the monopod foot slips and it all goes all over the place it's very amusing for the fans.

Usually at games where I have photographers sitting next to me - I tend to have a quick chat with them before the game and just to make sure that when I take photos with the long or short lens.. that it won't block her/him shooting in the same direction.
After all - we are all there to do a job and it makes it easier if we talk before the kick-off to make sure everyone can do their work comfortably.

Shooting on a 400 (monopod) + 70-200 (round neck)
As the action gets closer I just take two hands off the 400 and let it drop to the left shoulder (I'm left eyed), whilst I grab the 70-200 with both hands. Now, my left arm is around the monopod, as well as both legs as I tend to sit with my legs crossed. So the 400 is going nowhere. Then, what I do, is get everything out of focus. Standard.

Then, once I have gotten my shots, I stand up and block everyone else, whilst doing really smelly pressroom-food farts.

Best regards....
