Camera dilemma.

Over the last year I've managed to save some money towards an upgrade. I now am trying to decide between adding a 5D3 to my MkIV or selling the MkIV and buying a 1DX.

5D3. Pros. More opportunity to crop into the image with the higher resolution. Great AF.
Cons. Relatively low FPS and not quite as robust build quality. No built in grip.

1DX. Pros. High FPS. Great build quality. Built in grip. Great AF supposedly even better then the 5. Lots of customisation that I probably wouldn't use.
Cons. Expensive. Too much camera for my need maybe?

Would you prefer the two camera option or the single. Bearing in mind I primarily take wildlife and motorsport and it's purely a hobby for me.

Having changed from a Nikon D3s to a D800 for the resolution the route I would go is the 1dx as the noise will be a lot better for what you want and unless you are blowing up to stupid sizes you won't notice a difference. The D800 has a significantly higher resolution but is not a patch noise wise.

I think the only downside for you for the 5DmkIII is the lack of built in grip from your pros & cons - as you'll be adding the 5D to your 1D MKIV, the lower fps shouldn't be an issue (still quick though)

IDX too expensive and too much for your needs ??? Unfortunately, only you can decide this, I've been going through a similar dilemma as I'm considering looking for a 1D MKIV, but am unsure if I need one...

Do you find your 1D MKIV restricting you at all...or would you prefer 2 bodies.

As good as the 1dx is, I'd personally be tempted to save the cash and go with the 5d3. I take it you have all the lenses you need? 2 grand plus could buy some creacking glass.

Are you missing shots due to lack of AF ability, of swapping lenses?

As much as its great to have the latest gear, is it a need or a want?

If you have the money available, then go fot it, but is buying a new camera going to noticeably inprove your photography?

Don't know if it's a need or a want. Probably a want. Like the idea of 2 bodies and the sheer quality of the images I've seen out of the 5 makes me lean towards it. I've been thinking about this for a while but can never seem to make my mind up. Reading other threads on here where people have discussed the merits of the MkIV and the 5 makes me think that the 5 could be the best all round value for money camera that canon make.
 
i very much doubt the 5 would disappoint you there cracking cams .

The 1DMKIV doesn't hold a candle to the 5D3... I took my 1DIV back to the shop this morning and got my 5D3 back! That was a lucky escape from what could have been a very expensive mistake! :bang:
 
The only thing the 1dx provides in my eyes over the 5d3 is FPS, and another £2000+ for the privilege. No chance

I think the current best pairing is 5d3+1d4 which is what I'm after, 5d3 for pretty much everything other than when you need the extra FPS, flappy birds in flight etc and the 1.3x is a little bonus

You can have a go on my 5d3 if you want fella to make up your mind

Thanks for everyones views. As posted above the MkIV is no slouch. Its the AF system that is so good on the 5D3.

Appreciate the offer from both of you. Drew doesnt live too far away from me. I think that I will go down the 5D3 route. It seems that noone has a bad word to say about the camera. Which is unusual these days.
