Hi,

As a keen photographer and a Product Design student at Sheffield Hallam University, I have decided to look at designing a DSLR for my final project. I was just looking for some of your opinions on current camera design, and is there anything you would do to them to change them. Maybe to make them look nicer or easier to use.

Any comments and suggestions would be very appreciated and helpful!

Hi Twinny and welcome to the forum.

One gripe I hear is the left handed user, and left eye user, try a search for some older threads.

Phil.

Sort of related, but it really winds me up when manufacturers change the order of buttons.

Case in point,

Some options now use different wheels it feels completely alien switching between them, still can't get used to using the top wheel to change ISO.

Current DSLR camera design is very good (with a good choice of sizes and shapes to fit most hands and preferences) Only when using a compact do I realise how good DSLRs are. Nothing screams out as needing to be changed dramatically perhap with one exception;

I tend to carry my DSLR in one hand for prolonged periods so the fit of the grip is key and to me this could be made better by using a thermo-setting grip of some kind. Heat grip, hold camera until cooled and grip then fits hand/fingers perfectly. Same sort of approach as used for some cycling shoes for perfect fit.

I'd like a dof indicator, please. One that is actually useful.

Could you go completely off the wall?

Google goggles as a HUD/view finder, a compact lens and capture device in your hand? if you want SLR though you probably wont be able to get too much smaller as you need room for the movement of the mirror.

in reality you dont need the room original SLR's had for film reels so could make it more compact?

Some way of moving the pop-up flash further from the lens as I find some lenses get in the way and cast shadows.

Voice activation for some features.

Ability to use wireless networking or connect straight to mobile phone so you can share photos quickly.

Intelligent learning so that if you rate photos it learns how you prefer exposure so P mode would make a better go of things.

I like the idea of the moldable handgrip. Though my camera is quite comfortable.

For me the more buttons and direct access to camera settings the better, but it depends whether you're designing an entry level, or a more pro level as to whether you going for a useful design, or a minimal design. ;)

I like dual scroll wheels, (Nikon) but I think they could be angled to be more comfortable.

There could be a third scroll wheel on the left hand side to make adjustments with your left hand.

I like the little joysticks on the D4 and 1DX.

The buttons lighting up on the D4 is a great idea, and should be on more cameras imho.

I've always dislike the add on grip designs. Why they don't make it feel like the normal grip, and in the same position in relation to the lens is beyond me.
