I had a preconception that they would be exactly as you described, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I have been to Cardiff Camera Club http://www.cardiffcameraclub.co.uk/ three times now 2 evenings and a Saturday outing and I have to say I have loved every minute of it. The people there are extremely friendly and can't help enough, there is a great atmosphere and will be paying my subs this week and am looking forward to picking the brains of the many, many years of experienced that exists with in the club.
I may have been just lucky finding this club but would bet my bottom dollar that most clubs would be pretty similar, you will always get the odd one here and there, which would be the case what ever club you join no just photography.

Cheers

Craig

Like everything there are good and bad and you just have to shop around so to speak.

I have been a judge for many competitions and given also talks/advice sessions to various Camera Clubs in the South West, all were very friendly and made me very welcome, I have also been a member of a local Camera Club off and on since the early nineties and have helped many members with improving their hobby.

They can be a great source of knowledge, more a personal version of this forum really!

well thats a good start first one tonight, there off to a steam rally on Sunday thats one of the things i would like to do, see how the wife's fixed for a lift.

regards mark.

I attended our local one the other week for a trial to see how it went. Had a very interesting slide show by a pro and was a good few hours. I brought the average age down by about 40 years as they all seemed to be 70+ and they filled the school hall.

Hi getting cold feet about the meeting not as confident as i was meeting new people while in pain, is a pain :D.

TBH starting at 1945 and finishing at 2200 is very late for me 2130 is bang on pain tablet and sleepy tablet time.

I can manage the photography course as that finishes at 2100 and i am home for tablet time + somone else is doing the speaking and i nip off for a fag at breaktime so do not interact with people in a relaxed way , i have to be as near as dam it with the timing of the pain tablets otherwise i can go into shock from the pain or from overdosing on the pain tablets, either lack of or too much tablet is bad for me , the dreaded morphine will be next but i am hanging on till it becomes unbearable.

There i have just convinced myself not to go the wife says i should ??? and get out more, it's not the getting out but the quality of the time spent outside, i feel safer at home, my disability is in total control and it effects me pyscologically as well i was once a proud man but i now know the beginnings/feelings of an empty one i get so tired of explaining whats up with me all the time only my children keep me going ....Ramble Ramble.

thanks for listening Mark.

Mark,

Go along and have a look. They do not lock the doors, you are allowed to leave early, if you left at 21:15 you would have had an hour and a half and there is every chance it will do you some good (mentally if not physically).

for the pain meds, can you take them with you, take them at 9:30 and take the sleep ones when you get in?

Gettin out of the house, away from the kids and mrs one night a week has done my mental health wonders, I was on the verge of a mental breakdown I think.

Hard to comment on other peoples situations but given what info there is....GO! You can leave anytime you like.

One thing I am pretty sure of.. If you dont go then you will always be wondering what it was like .

if you fancy it, then go, if you don't, well, don't. But, and this is that big but, don't let the pill thing get in the way of what could be a great night out with new friends. Take the pills with you and slip outside at the right moment, or as others have said, just make your excuses and leave early

all the ones I've been to would not suit anyone actually interested in photography lol

But you're so brilliant already you would not benefit from the interaction of other people with a similar interest! :bonk:

Hi and thanks for that, a good kick is what i need been up since 0400 this fine morning so have told myself to go to the next one.

I will organise my day a bit better and take the advice on the pill situation, sometimes we cannot see the wood for the tree's. I will try to have a nap mid afternoon to compensate for the Late night ;). I cannot go to the next one as wife is at youth club next week but the one after that i will be ok for, it was a competition last night so they would be busy judging and looking i will go on a instruction night that would be ideal for my first time.

once again many thanks you all gave me a lift

Kind Regards mercmanuk

TBF no one at any club I've been to shots the same as what I do for starts so no I'd not really benifit anything and judges of the comps, well they should be lined up and shot lol

Thinking about it, isn't TP itself a very large virtual camera club?

I should imagine every camera club is different. Personally I don't go just to benefit in terms of my own photography but rather to spend a bit of time amongst people who have a similar interest. I've just joined my local one and it's very relaxed, I quite like the fact that at no time have I yet heard anyone there mention a camera brand. Sort of proves that they are about the image rather than the equipment.

Mercman - just out of interest, which camera club is it?

I noticed your location as Manchester, and also know that Timperley Altrincham camera club meet on a Friday night - one which I have been thinking about, but never been to myself.

If it is that one and you do decide to go for it - I may well come along and offer some moral support!

Let me know.

Cheers.
