Camera clubs

Equipment clubs? Is there such a thing? I think most are just photography clubs, and I'm sure most will have an interest in equipment. I suppose an internet search for camera clubs (your area) will turn up enough to go at.

I tried to contact a couple of camera clubs in the Blackpool area, none of them bothered to answer the email.

I went to one when I was working near Edinburgh, they just wanted to chat about the gear they had and what they were buying next. complete waste of a night. :bonk:

If they can't be bothered answering, then maybe they're not worth bothering with. If I ran a camera club I'd be very keen to get new members whoever they are.

My experience with my local club wasn't too good. I found the members were very clicky and didn't really like new members. They used their flash equipment to boost their egos.

Sorry to put damper on things , hopefully you'll find a club that isn't like the one I went to.

I used to belong to a camera club or two ......but I left as I found it was a dicks at dawn contest..... Who had the best gear, who knew the most...etc.....that is why I joined talk photography.....it is great people with a passion and are willing to become a community without any of the "I am greater that thou" crap.

I joined the local camera club, well it's the dullest nights possible. Just a bunch of retired old farts who take photos. The guy who runs it works hard arranging speakers and club comps. I stay as I enjoy the comps and monthly themes, but they are a pretty boring bunch. My friend goes to his club which is much younger and weekly and the standard of photos is very very high but very clickywith the elitism of gear. Not got full frames and top glass they not interested hence I won't go

Then I have been very lucky. I joined a great local camera club last year - the members are really friendly, we have interesting speakers, popular competitions and even get chocolate biscuits with our tea! Plus loads of people to ask questions of. What more could you ask for?

I want to join a camera club in the Scunthorpe - North Lincs area but struggling. I'm wanting to learn more and discover new techniques. I cant really afford massively expensive courses nor do I have the time (family man). So I thought of joining a club to get more out of my camera....

I joined a couple but my experience with both was that they were just for people interested in competitions and that was it. We did have a few interesting talks but very few say a ratio of 1 talk to 5 comps and as I have no interest at all in competitions it was really a waste of time. The best period for me was the summer break when we just met socially once a week. Funnily enough there was never any talk about equipment between members so definitely no one upmanship and on that score it was good because it was results that counted. I have to say though that as the club was run for, and by its members competitions was obviously what they wanted. But not me.

Just a bunch of retired old farts who take photos. Thanks for the insult.

You only get out what you put in, and i by the way am 70 years of age. I am a retired Joiner [ time served] and ex RAF.
How old are most of you??????? i think a lot younger than me, but can you take a photograph? This is the reason i joined my club to learn. We have all ages in the club and
we all get along very well. I have only been taking images for six years, and won photographer of the year last season, so i have been taught a lot at our club.
All i can say again is you get out what you put in.

Look on YouTube for tutorials and search in general online - you'll get a lot more out of it that joining a photography club. If you are lucky then it will actually be worthwhile and interesting but more than likely it will be full of the people described above

Ive found them hard going, my last was a very relaxed easy going club ,but has gone down the landscape/photoshop clique like all the others ive tried. Still go join one it may just suit you.

i used to think clubs where very clicky UNTIL i joined a local one i was made very very welcome we have about 40 members all between the ages of 16 to 78 with simply point and shoot cameras to top of the range dslr the clubs motto is "its not the camera its the picture" i can honestly say its brought my photograghty on a treat

I've been thinking about checking out my local club. I looked on the history section on their website & my grandad was listed as one of the founder members back during WW2 when it was created as the RAE camera club.
Bit hard to tell how active they are from the website but I'll prob pop down to a meeting at some point :)

Sounds just like our club!

I know some people don't like club competitions, but I do find they make you think about your photography and get out with your camera, especially if a competition is looming and you have nothing to enter!
