Hi Folks.

I have been thinking about joining the local camera club.

Is anybody in a camera club and are they worth the money joining ?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,

It's a good place to meet like minded people.

I would suggest that you attend first couple of sessions in all camera clubs close to your vicinity and then decide. The first couple of sessions are free or at the most 2 quids per session.

Also go for one which may have 2-3 meetings per months rather than meetings every week to maintain the freshness. That way they are slightly cheaper annual fees wise compared to the ones which meet every week.

Also look online [if the club(s) have a website. Most of them do] about their programs. Depending on what you prefer you can decide whether you want more of practical stuff in your club or lectures by speakers or mix & match. Make sure which ever club you join, do go out for summer outings during summer.

Good luck.

Funny this subject coming up now.

Tommorow evening I`m going to the local club for the first time. Not totally sure of what to expect, or what the people are like, but I`ll give it a go.

Well worth it - find a local club, join it, enter every comp

Best & easiest way to learn/improve in my book

Perhaps I would say that as Sec of Barnsley's biggest & now, of recent years, best club!

Totally agree with this. I have not long joined my local camera club. Been to 4 sessions now. Lasts nights was the bi-monthly competition. I entered 5 images in. Each image is given a mark out of 20. Four of mine got 16 and the other got 15. Well pleased. That not gives me a target to improve on for next time.

Its also great to meet other like minded people. We have various things in our program like speakers, comps, outings, model sessions, lighting sessions and allsorts so its a good way to gain experience in all sorts of areas of photography.

Highly recomended

Cheers guys.

I will be joining the local camera club next week or so !

Hmm...I've just noticed there is one that meets literally around the corner from me. Do they not tend to be frequented by beardy wierdies? (No offense intended)

That is a fairly accurate description for many of the members of the one I go to. But since im well on the way to becoming one myself its not too bad. The one I go to isn't too bad, but there seems to be far too many political problems instead of photography. There also seem to be a lot of people who are far to shy of showing their work. And im not talking about newbies, but people who have been taking pictures for 40 years+. It was several months before I actually saw any photographs.

Been in a number of clubs & didnt care for the bitching that goes on. The one I am now is small ( 16 members) & its a very relaxed club. They have spent a Sunday on the hill here & enjoyed themselves. Tomorrow I have the dubious honour of finding them some models for a portrait evening. I also belonged to a big club in Dundee for a while. Most of the members wouldnt even talk to a country lad like me.

you guys are in lancs, which ones u joined?

I'm a beardy weirdo so just had to join a club locally:cuckoo: It's a great club and a recent injection of youth has really helped in getting more variety organised rather than just speakers.

We now have a main room as well as a small room once a month as a studio and bring in a model (sometimes male, sometimes female) as well as the usual competitions and practicals. A great local friendly club (New City Photography Society) but a bit of a commute from where you are!

depends on what the club are about, if they discuss photo's and assorted camera talk, then its worth it, but if they are like the last club i was in and just payed other togs to show slide shows, then walk right passed.

have a look see what you think. As far as know they have full monty including studio groups etc

Yegods, that rings a bell - I used to be in that one. About 1973/4 if I recall correctly. That's the one (or used to be) in a converted shop premises on a corner? Looking at the map on their site, it's certainly in the same-ish location.
It was a bloody good club and I learned a lot from the members in my short time there.

Hi all, i joined a local club here in Newcastle along with a pal
of mine. We have been to two meetings so far, and have to say i have been imprest with the quality of some of the work shown so far. Not only that it a very welcoming club.
They are part of the Northern Federation of camera clubs, and have inter club nights and competitions, and meet weekly. They also have informal summer activities.
It is presentation night on Saterday, so looking forward
to that.

What happens at these clubs? im very quiet person and dont want to join my local one if im going to look silly for not been up on my camera talk.
Do you learn things or is it just like a gathering?

Sawman you didn't think much to the Dundee club then? I had thought about going along to that one myself, but had the typical beardy wierdies concerns, might still try it though although if they wont talk to you I'm not sure what they will do with a brummie lol.

I joined my local club, have been to 4 meetings so far, one about mounting(prints:lol:), one had a visit from a fantastic nature tog called Gordon Langsbury FRPS showing some stunning photos from Florida, and last week was a projected image comp, which i placed 3rd in the restricted class.
All in all it is well worth while joining one, especially if your youngish, helps keep the average age down, ours is about 50ish.
Dean:)

hmm, i think i'll get back on with searching out a club in the Leeds area and pay a visit - probably what i need to get me back out there with the nights drawing in.

Ogbyte

You're in luck ogbyte - one of the regions largest and most prestigious clubs is not far from you in Normanton

This week (Tuesday night) they are having a presentation by Dave Coates - invited back as he's been described as showing some of the best landscapes they've ever seen - which must be very very good

I'll be there too with a couple from my local club, so if you fancy a meet just pm me and I'll forward fuller details and introduce you to their President too

So...Minky_Monkey - how was it?

Well.....

There were a couple of other people in my age bracket (I`m 32) and everybody else was collecting their pension....

They had a lecture from a guy that does underwater photography, all very interesting and rather spectacular and all that, except it was really only a show and tell.

They run competitions, but only have practical workshops about 5 times a year.

Thinking about it, it`s not really what I`m after, I want to learn by example really so it`s back to the drawing board.

I was looking at a course held at the local college which I feel will suit my needs better.
