I am considering joining a club and looking for one that suits in Kent. I was a member of one many many years ago, and I remember lots of competitions. I like them but not all the time. I'm really interested in finding one where there's an emphasis on guest lectures, exhibitions and, in particular, where members work with each other teaching one another techniques and giving tips, hints and advice. I live near Maidstone/Gravesend/London area and would be happy to travel a bit.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

If your on facebook have a look for Tenderden Photography Group seems to be quite a friendly little group sure they have the occasional meet up, I know it's not a camera club as such but still worth a look.

Thanks for the information, Philip but I was really looking for a club with a program for the year. Nonetheless I will have a look of FB.

Melvyn, I'm not sure if you were interrupted or the victim of a glitch?

Thanks George. It's a bit of a journey but certainly looks worthwhile. I will investigate the possibilities.

I'd avoid Sittingbourne Photographic Society unless being driven into an induced coma is high on your list of priorities.

Well Ruth.... I do suffer from insomnia but.. :p

Are you a club member at all and/or have you local knowledge of good clubs? If you don't want to be too direct on a forum please do send me a PM if you prefer.

Hi....I tried a club in Gillingham, and SPS...I found both to be mind numbingly boring tbh.
Lots of gear one-upmanship and competitions run and judged by characters who made Hitler look mild mannered.
I decided I'm not a club kinda girl. :D

Seems like you had some less than ideal experiences. I was a member at Orpington years back and I enjoyed it. Nice people, friendly and helpful. I've moved away from that area but maybe I should have another look there.

I visited Bromley twice last year but didn't find it the most welcoming club I've been to.
Think I'll try Orpington this evening.

There's a good one in Hodsoll Street near Wrotham if that's not too far for you. It only meets once a month on a Friday evening. Also if the East Malling one is still going, that's a good one. They meet on a Tuesday. I can get more details for both if you want

Hi Kelly. Yes that's near to me. If you are able to let me have any details I'd be ever so grateful. You can PM me if you'd prefer.

Which one?

Hi Kelly. Thank you very much. I will investigate these further :)

I would say that most clubs are into competition but don't let that put you off. Ours does tutorials for beginners trips out so there's lots to do other than the comps.. give it try we let new comers try for three weeks to see if they like it.

Sure. I'll give it a go once I've picked one I like the look of and if they let you try so much the better :)

That sounds like a great club. I'm considering it. I work in London and could possibly go on my way home. Thanks for the link :)

I can't say I am much of a fan of camera clubs. There are few round me in Wigan and I have been a member of a couple. The trouble is that they tend to be personality driven and one club in particular ended up doing the same mind numbing stuff every week - I had a hard disk full of church and graveyard photos for example as that is all we ever tended to do.

Some clubs just seem obsessed with competitions - and we know how that ended up with a certain person in a certain club round here being caught plagiarising.

I actually think it is more productive to make a few contacts to go out shooting with when possible. I've always been one to get out shooting rather than talking about macro extension tubes.
