I went along, (with my new 'tog buddy, Graphic-Addict) to a local camera club tonight, for the first time, with more than a bit of trepidation........and it was ......REALLY GOOD!!

Hat's off to Kettering camera club.........they were really welcoming and friendly. We will definitely be going back there again. There was a wide range of ages and although it was predominantly male, quite a few females to keep a balance.

It was an "open night" where anyone could ask any questions and others tried to help out with their opinions. There was also a very useful demonstration of how to cut mounts ......apparently a vital part of "showing" your images.

I had heard all kinds of different experiences on clubs from folk here, so my advice is...give it a try! You might be pleasantly surprised. I was.

Is there a list on here of camera clubs in the UK? I'm in Rugby and woudn't mind maybe going along to see what's what.

Were there many younger types there?

Had a look at a local club here and reading the details of upcoming nights they tend to focus more on looking at AV presentations than getting out there for shoots :( Will probably wander along at some point to give it a try though.

Be interesting to hear your experiences.

The Kettering and District photographic society....in Warkton village hall. Would be great to see you!

Cheers

Once I have the house sorted I will try and get to it
Will drop you a pm once sorted

That's the problem I had, went along to my local club and the average age was about 90!! Having said that, they have adopted digital in a big way. I haven't had a chance to go back due to family difficulties.

I wouldn't mind that too much, it's the film luddites who irritate me. An older photog can be an invaluable resource as long as they are willing to impart their knowledge.

I've met a few who simply won't talk to you once they see you are digital :(

That will change over time I think. The Smethwick International Exhibition next year will be cutting out slide entries and moving entirely to digitally projected images.

The club I am in, Wrekin Arts is coming around slowly and next season the slide competition is moving to projected images, either slide or digital.

I think camera clubs are seeing a bit of a revolution at the moment with digital photography becoming so popular so they would do better embracing it rather than not.

My local club looks quite good unfortunately they meet on a thursday which I am always busy on.

Those there on Tuesday night were largely digital but when I whipped out my Bronica  There were a few Oooooh's and lots wanted to get their hands on it. I think there are quite a few film users, so it's a nice mix. Time will tell, but first impressions were good.

hey photostar...

i was there too.

my first time. i was the skinhead with the blue jacket on.

dont worry im getting dutch courage to go to my local one tonight lol

Just located my local club online. I'll be paying them a vist next week!

I can't see why anyone wouldn't embrace it, most digital bodies can use existing lenses.

In the past i've been very reluctant to just go out and take experimental photographs simply because of the cost £3-4 for a 36 exposure film then another £7-8 to get it developed to find out they were rubbish.

Now it's take 300 pictures (much to the annoyance of my wife) and see what I get, I love digital
