Picked up a jessops bargain!

180x180 white tripod screen which goes from ankles up. Great for headshots or waist upwards ..

but the screen is white .. my room lighting is normal yellowy bulbs .. i have an onboard flash .. help lol

Hi

I'm a little confused about what you mean. Have you bought a white panel for use as a background?

Ideally you're going to have to use a flash on the background, and a flash to illuminate your subject. You're unlikely to be able to get a pure white background with purely ambient illumination.

The best I think you can hope to achieve if this is the case, is by setting your white balance for the ambient lighting, and then gel your pop up flash accordingly.

Hope that helps in some way shape or form?! lol

you know the screens you display a projector onto?

one of them from jessops ...

and what sort of diffuser would i need for my pop up flash?

ideally id like a couple of cheap flashes and brolleys

Oh yeah gotcha...

You need a gel (clear plastic acetate) coloured correctly, so it matches the K of light coming from your interior (yellowy) lights you are talking about, to put over your flash.

If all light sources are the same temperature, then setting your white balance accordingly will work.

I wouldn't really use the pop up flash for anything other than emergencies, fair game for practicing with it of course, but I think you're going to want some dedicated flashes by the sound of it mate

I know it's cheap but I really don't like it, unless you're talking about big bucks Kino Flos or HMIs at £8000 a piece, lol. In which case yes yes yes they are awesome!

Get some money together and grab yourself a starter flash kit from Elinchrom or Bowens, or consider stuff like Lencarta which are good for the price

im on a TIGHT budget though and im not a pro so anything cheap & cheerful will do

couplea yn460s would work, say 3 of them? with a radio trigger as you can't easily fire them off the pop up on a canon (it is ttl only unlike nikons there is no manual option)

how do i do that?

what exactly do i need to buy to make it all work?

the absalute bare minum is 3 flashes, 2 yn460s on the background bare with a flag to prevent some of the flare (think black card) on their feet on chairs. Then one for the subject in say an umbrella on a lightstand with an umbrella adapter. All slaving off the ttl preflash of the popup (yn 460s have a mode for this but I have no idea how badly it works)

the results are likely to be a bit **** as I find most portable studio work to be in some way a bit sit as there are way too many compromises, you will add the issues of slow recycle times, the popup causing confusion and not being certain the flashes fired

how about a pair of yn468's ... which are ettl and the yongnuo st-e2 ..

that way its all wireless and thats all i need? right :S

no, thats an awesome system but with canon flashes (which are waaay nicer btw)

also I don't know how well it copes with white bg work

no - they won't work, like Dave said they are compatible with the ettl that comes through the hot shoe not the clever optical transmissions that an st-e2 sends

so the clever optical transmissions the st-et send do what?

i dont understand what the st-e2 does over the rf602's

i thought it allowed wireless ettl as long as you had ettl flashes :s
