Camera Batteries, always pick their moments!

Havent got a camera at the moment so I took charge of the fujifilm s5500 that my fiance got given for free this afternoon, I know its old and there are a lot better out there but it was free so might as well use it for now!
4 AA batteries in-Check.
It's been a dull and dreary day weather wise, but we went down Porthcawl seafront for a walk anyway, took the camera even though wasn't expecting any good photo opportunities.

There was a thin slither of orange and pink light shining through the grey clouds out over the sea, so I took photos of that thinking it looked pretty, within 10 minutes the thin slither developed into a full blown orange and pink sunset with the orange shining on the water as the sun went down!
but....

my batteries RAN OUT! tried the old take them out and swap them around business but nothing, not even one shot could be taken.

I must have the photography bug as I was devastated!

Why oh why do they make so many cameras with AA batteries instead of lithium ones?

Rant over, I'm sure many of you will feel my pain in these dull months when any sun light is luxury! :bang::(

I've had that happen to me too only once though , you learn after the first time to carry loads of spares .
 
You will do it once, maybe twice and never again, dont worry the sun sets and rises every day so there will be more chances :)

I know some people swear by AA batteries as you can get them pretty much anywhere but Li-Ion all the way for me, I'd never buy a camera that took AA ever again. ;)
 
When I can actually afford a camera I'm not having any AA battery nonsense :bang: yep I know there will be many more sunsets etc, but it was just such an unplanned spectacle I really wanted a photo, I dont actually remember the last time I saw a nice sunset the weather has been that awful down here!
The sea is only 10 minutes from my house so hadn't thought of taking spare batteries as it was such a dull afternoon.
But as you all said, spare batteries in the future for sure!!!:bonk:
 
Most digital cametas will eat disposable batteries very quickly. If it only takes AAs then you need to get some good quality rechargables (7dayshop's "ready to go" are good as are Sanyo eneloops).
 
I use rechargable AA batteries myself, aswell as a spare for convenience. The cost of buying AA packs individually soon stack up monthly.

Like the 7D? The grip has an adapter for 6 AAs. Useful for when you cannot recharge for whatever reason.

Alkaline single use batteries can have a capacity over 2500mAh and Lithium single use over 3500mAh whereas the rechargeable from my 7D is about 1600mAh so that covers whether single use last or not.

I am surprised at the way in which some photographers seem to use batteries. In another of my hobbies, there correct function is much more critical I have learnt the discipline of always charging before I am going to use them and checking periodically in use. I also carry spare rechargeables and at times single use AAs for the 7D.

Yes, we've all been there and done that - used to be film was full, now it's card is full, batteries dead etc - always when you want "that" shot...
 
I have 4 Sony Batteries for my a580 ( as the grip holds 2) and 3x 8Gb cards to be sure to be sure :lol::lol:

beeen caught out too many times in the past, not to carry ample batteries/Cards now

I know now to always have batteries, and to even take them when you dont think theres's going to be much photo opportunity :bonk:

Good points. I'm often going out with a part-charged battery in the body plus a fully-charged spare in my pocket.
On the odd occasion I've also forgotten to take a spare. :(
No reason not to swap the part-charged for a full and so have two fully charged ones as they don't suffer the 'memory effect' the old ni-cad ones did.

I was put off AA when I had a Casio compact.
The batteries weighed almost as much as the camera, didn't last particularly long and I found having to carry a set of spares a bit of a pain so I ditched it for a smaller-bodied Lumix with a tiny li-ion battery.

'Orses fer courses as they say. :lol:
 
Where is a good cheap place to get camera batteries, I have a canon 600D they seem quite expensive to me...

I picked up a 3rd party grip for my 600d from Amazon which cost me £32 and came with 2 batteries and a remote release. Fantastic quality at a great price.
 
Ebay is as good as anywhere Chris, I bought 2 for my 40D for £8.45 delivered! :cool:
