Camera bag recommendations?

First off appologies if this is in the wrong forum :thinking:

I'm off to New York in April with uni and am just about to buy another lens to take with me. I want to take a Canon 350D with grip, Canon 18-55mm kit lens, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 USM and a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 lens, plus the usual accessories- copious memory cards, batteries, chargers etc etc.

I currently have a Lowepro Nova 4AW and whilst this is sufficient for shoots where I don't have to lug kit around, I'm thinking a rucksack might be a bit easier to carry round NY!! I'd prefer a Lowepro but am open to anything that will fit the above kit and also is as cheap as possible!! The cheaper the better, I am a poor student :lol:

I am also looking at the rucksack type camera bag. I am amazed at the amount available, so many to choose from. Two that have caught my eye to press are the offerings from Redsnapper and Nanue. Not seen either yet so no first hand experience

1st off welcome to the forum :clap:

If you do a search, top right of the screen, you'll find lots of similar threads, but beware that IMO bags are a personal decision, it really depends on what you can get on with.

For me I prefer a shoulder bag, because I can access my kit easily I can swap shoulders when one gets a bit tired and it's easy to put on and off.
I've got the one on the Redsnapper site, http://www1.clikpic.com/Redsnapper/photo_2690758.html I like this because it fits all my kit plus a bottlle if water and other important bits. This one may be bit big for you but if you phone him he sometimes has stuff not on his site. He's a very friendly chap and will give you a discount if you mention you're a TP member.

I don't like slingbacks because the weight is on one shoulder and can't be changed, I don't like backpacks, because I don't so there :razz: personal decision.

Like a lot of people on this site I've gone through several bags before deciding what suits me. Most of them are still stuck in the boxroom :lol:

If you're thinking of a 'rucksack' type bag then I don't think you can go wrong with Lowepro's best seller, the 'Mini Trekker'

It's a very lightweight bag and also has the waterproof (AW) cover. Will easily take all your gear.

There's normally quite a few used ones about too.
 
Check ebay for Gem bags. I bought one for a friend this week. It's identical to my Lowepro mini trekker at a fraction of the price. Well worth a look at least:thumbs::thumbs: Sorry dunno how to post a link:shrug:
 
I think a backpack's a REALLY bad idea for NYC to be honest.
I spent a few days literally just walking Manhatten and I used a Billingham 335.
You don't really want to walk around with an SLR in full view all the time (although to be honest I personally think it's safer than London over there). If you had all your kit in a backpack, you're going to miss lots of shots because you won't have time to dump the pack on a suitable surface and rummage around in it.
 
Choose one that will fit within airline size restrictions for hand luggage.

Don't forget you don't have to take everything with you. Some stuff - chargers etc., could go in the hold luggage and can be left at the hotel.

A jacket or photovest with big pockets means you can keep stuff around your person. How about wearing the South African Viper Assault Vest for a laff?

Look at the Redsnapper range - seems very good VFM and TP members get a discount.
 
Hmmm cheers, I like the look of the mini trekker bag :) I'm not going over to NY primarily to do photography, it's a fieldtrip so I won't have a huge amount of time to set up shots or anything as I'll be in a group. Not keen on a shoulder bag as I already have one, and don't want a slingback as I'm just not keen on them, find them uncomfortable.

Also as I can only take 1 piece of hand luggage I'm thinking the camera might have to go in the hold (as much as I don't want it to, I have medicines and other things that need to come onto the plane with me as hand luggage), so it's got to be a sturdy bag whatever I choose!!. Cheers for your suggestions :)
