Have you seen these Martin? Expensive but might be worth considering.

The Thinktank Glass Limo would be big enough with the hood reversed. Other than that a F stop bag with XL Pro ICU would be big enough with hood reversed. I carry my 200-400 with 1.4TC and camera (with grip) as one attached unit. The hood is reversed but it doesn't take long to flip the hood around.I was looking for something a little more rucksack like that might take a few extra bits and pieces....
Something like this but for a 300![]()
I've got two options for that setup (based on a 300/2.8 IS MkI), Martin.
The Kinesis 511....a tube with harness or shoulder strap http://www.kgear.com/bags/l/l511-compact-long-lens-case-515.html
or
The Vanguard Sykyborne 53......a regular rucksack http://www.vanguardworld.co.uk/photo_video_gb/skyborne-53.html#go-description
The Vanguard is very comfortable and just takes the setup with the 1D4 but I pop of the eyepiece off the 1Dx to avoid squashing the rubber.

I'm guessing when you say 'ready to go' you mean with hood facing forward. I've thought about this before but I'm not sure I would want the weight of camera and lens resting solely on the lens hood connection point. It also keeps the weight balanced in the backpack, especially with most of the weight in the bottom of the bag rather than the bottom 4-6 inches just being lightweight lens hood.
I'm having a clear-cut of bags, and may have just the thing. A Kata kt hb -207. Bought about a year ago on this forum.
A decent sized rucksack that will take a 300mm f3.8 attached to a gripped body. Plus a load of other stuff. May be able to post, but obviously pick up would be easier. The ideal rucksack for a sports or wildlife shooter. £80 plus postage if interested.
It'll take the 500 with the hood reversed or the 300 ready to shoot. There is a "doughnut" in the bottom to fit around the 300's hood to keep the lens central in the case. The Kinesis looks like it was designed for the 500 not 300 which might make it too big?
I also don't see anybody selling one in the UK ?
It'll take the hood okay if the combination is carried lens down, body at the top.The Vanguard looks decent (but not cheap) if it can take the diameter of the 300 hood?
Thanks for the suggestions folks.
I found this Tenba which looks big enough with the hood stowed.

I had a quick look at the Think Tank but thought this might be better? Glass Taxi or the Street Walker Pro
Where are you based Robert?
Too many choices... Wish I could try them out..
Lots to think about....
