Camera advice

I am a bit out of the loop now, so looking for some advice on where to go with kit. I have a D750 with sigma 35mm art, but it’s largely been a paperweight recently. I want to go mirrorless and need good AF as I have 2 young kids. Image quality is important but I don’t expect to print large images often. Ideally need some half decent iso performance for indoor shooting.

Brand agnostic so no major preferences. Thoughts? Maybe £1-1.5k budget initially and would ideally be looking for a 35/50 prime, or maybe a smaller zoom and to pick up other lenses in the future.
 
Nikon z series would make the most sense as you can keep using your existing lens with the ftz adapter and it will will be an easy transition as the menus are much the same.

Im not sure on the differences of the z6 and z7, so someone else will have to fill those blanks.
 
With a budget of £1k-£1.5k will you be looking at the used market or hoping to buy new?

If you're not insistent on sticking to Nikon you could have a look at the Sony A7III and 35mm f1.8 but that'll blow the budget. I have the older original A7 which probably wont interest you but I do have the 35mm f1.8 and can say that it's relatively small and light, sharp from wide open, fast to focus even on my leisurely A7 and it focuses close too which can come in handy. Its only weaknesses are IMO par for the course bokeh at widest apertures and some ca which is again IMO par for the course but thankfully is only likely to show up in specific instances.

Z7 has 45.7 mp
Z6 has just 24mp

Z7 costs more etc.
 
Why do you want to go mirrorless?

FWIW I switched from FF Canon to Fuji a few years back, as I wanted a smaller a lighter system - going back to a cropped sensor was a compromise I was willing to make to get the smaller kit.

It gets lots of use taking photos of my boys:

ditto - what is it about your D750 that it has become a paperweight ? Too big or video slightly awkward etc ?

The usual question first: what lenses do you need ( or have now ) in terms of FL, aperture ? for a MILC.

FF lenses for MILCs tend to get expensive - even used though I guess Sony might be more cost effective than native Z or RF glass.

Would m43 do what you need? How fast an AF system do you need ? That sort of stuff. Again, for a faster AF on oly - it needs an em1.2 or higher - still about 650 quid used but you have some scope for some really good and inexpensive lenses within your budget - m43 is awash with superb glass.

I also had an A7 which I used for adapted lenses only so never used the AF system on it. I believe gen 2 ie a7ii had better AF and IBIS. Used prices for each are about £439 and £650 - the Sonys seem to keep their value pretty well - I bought sold my used A7 about the same money some years ago. No idea about Sony lenses.

I have a z6 now which replaced my d750 and the A7. The Z lenses are great but pricey. I need an MILC for old MF lenses. I do no video and so the Z is not an upgrade for me from my D750 just purely in terms of picture quality or AF.

If you just want a new camera, buy one. But there's nothing wrong with the D750 in terms of IQ, ISO and DR... Personally I'd buy a new lens to shoot the kids with - a fast 50 will go nicely with the 35.

......'just 24mp' , it wasn't all that long ago we used to say "wow, it's got an incredible 12mp". How things change over time, I wonder if, in a few years we'll be saying " it's only 2 TB" ....
 
I'd suggest that mirrorless is the way to go. But I'd also work out exactly why the D750 has become a paperweight first. Two young kids can make all but an iPhone paperweights...
