Hi, I am relatively new here, have been lurking for a while, but only recently started contributing to threads.

Firstly, I have to say - What a great site!!

You guys have inspired me to take my love of photography further, have previously only been a 'viewer', but would now love to be able to take some great pic's of my own.

So my question is, which camera should I start out with??

Not keen on the SLR option, am very into computers too, so definately feel DSLR is the option for me.

Budget is limited, so will probably be limited to cheaper end of market!

Any help/ opinions will be gratefully received.

:)

What is your budget Dalton?

Steep, my budget at the moment is around £400- £500.

Well you can buy a Nikon D40 with the kit lens for £345 or the D50 for £350 both excellent cameras at good prices. Or if you prefer Canon, you can get a 350D for £345 or the 400D for £445.

There are other makes to consider too Pentax, Olympus, Sony, Sigma but the two most popular makes are Canon and Nikon.

Bear in mind that which ever camera you buy you will need to get things like memory cards etc as well so budget for them.

I'd get the Canon or D50 over the D40, although the D40X might be worth a look. 350D is a bargain for £345 though...

Out of stock though, unless your local branch has one...

No restrictions on lens other than that they have the right mount ie Nikon AF

You can pick up a D70 body for under 300 if you look around and then buy some decent lenses off me to get you going. Good thinking batman.

Not true AFAIK - The D40 needs AF-S lenses i.e. lenses with their own motor drive (Sigma HSM etc) - non AF-S lenses would only be manual focus ... Paul ;)

I stand corrected sir :) I was going by the specs as shown on DPReview.

No probs Steep! Chuff knows what Nikon were on when they came up with that idea although they seem to have got the rest of the D40 right (esp the latest X version)
Paul ;)

Right guys, after spending most of this week looking for and testing out various new cameras, I decided to go for the Nikon D70S.

I guess that makes me a 'darksider' on this forum now!

I very nearly went for the D40, but in the end found a 'new' D70S for £10 more, I felt that I was getting a lot more camera for my money and that the D70S would enable more potential for learning.

I hope I have chosen the right camera, certainly my first impressions are great! Have only ever had 'point & shoot' before, so have a lot to learn!

Hopefully I am in the right place for that, certainly from what I have seen on these forums - I think I am!

Not got any money left now for a while, but will obviously need some photo-editing software in the near future, any advice please?

Also, anybody know of any freeware/ shareware software to 'get me buy' until funds allow?

Cheers,

Dalton.

Google The Gimp mate, it´s a free photo editing package, well rated. You could get a cs2 trial as well.

Good on ya with the d70s too, i´ve seen good results with that camera and you´ll definitely learn a lot. Ignore all the snobs and fussy beggars moaning about canon v nikon, they both have great cameras with which you can get great images if you know what you´re doing. I´d shoot on toast if I could, i don´t care. As you know I´m a darksider as they say too. Welcome to the team!

The Gimp is very good though not easy to learn to use, however free is free :)

Thanks, I will check out The Gimp (never thought I would say that  )

enjoy your d70s Dalton, I have a d70 and was going to sell it a while back and after reading all the reviews and examining the megapixel difference between 6 and 10, using actual images that I downloaded and weighing up price difference I decided to keep it and I'm glad that I did.

the D70s is a very capable camera...you just need the lenses now, Oooh, slippery slope and all that..lol
