Our camcorder is getting a bit long in the tooth, its a panasonic mini dv and has been excellent for about 6 yrs. Now I quite fancied a digital hard disc camera but I'm pretty sure I have read somewhere on here that the image quality is poor in comparison. My budget is upto a max of £300 hopefully wanting to get something for around the £250 mark. I want the best picture I can get for my cash rather than getting new technology at the cost of image quality.
Any advice would be appreciated

You may need to go for High Def HDD camcorder to get your expected PQ , generally a SD HDD camcorder will not produce the image quality you currently enjoy from Mini DV.
There are 1 or 2 older SD HDD camcorder that have a larger CCD that perform as good as mini dv ( Sony SR90E ) for instance .
Most of the current HDD models dont sport a viewfinder , which may not be an issue for you.
Might have to up the budget a little ;)

I haven't owned a camcorder for a long time but decided just recently that would get one and some of the bargains available with discount codes and cashback pointed me to the Sony TG3 which is a memory stick HD camcorder (they are MS Duos so not that cheap £30 for 8gb) but all in price was £397 but with a £60 cashback offer from Sony meaning total price will be £337 which for an HD camcorder only a tad bigger than my Iphone seemed a bargain to me.

I would certainly recommend taking a look at it to see what you think, I am well chuffed with it personally

Whats the picture quality like compared to mini dv ?? thats if you have had that format to compare. My current mini dv is over 6 years old so I would have thought that your sony hd should be better.
How long do you get recording wise on a 8gb card ??

Thanks for your reply

Can't say about how it comares to mini DV but compared to my old camcorder it is superb and in all honesty for light (ie outside or bright indoors) it is as good as what you see through your own eyes normally!!!! Inside low-light not so great but that is one of the issues with most HD camcorders so i am led to believe?

Recording time on 8gb should be about 80 mins.
