Hi all,

any camcorders in the market (at sub £300 range) which can take *.MOV (H264/MPEG-4) files etc like DSLR can? Anyone using those?

thank you

Which DSLR did you end up with?

it's not actually me it's my friend who wants videos doing for youtube :) So he went for canon 650D (as he had already canon lens and old canon 1000D)

he got it from WEX for £239 (6000clicks and 12 minths warranty so not too bad of the deal)

That's a decent choice for YouTube output and helps he already had a Canon lens. Point him towards the Canon 50mm 1.8 as he should get some good aesthetics out of it and also towards Magic Lantern (http://www.magiclantern.fm/) which should transform his Canon camera into a decent video camera.

Happy shooting.

thanks a lot for the advice, as I am nikon shooter myself so dont know much about canon cameras (did a bit of research which canon camera best for video and found 650D.... best for the money it is, i think)

reason i was asking for the advice - I will be the one working on adobe premiere pro/ after effects to edit those videos :)

No worries. I am a Nikon shooter myself and use my Nikon primarily for video. Most use Canon but I went against the norm as prefer the Nikon colours and Nikon lenses.

The 650D is value for money. Just ensure he gets a semi decent mic to plug into the Canon to get better audio.

You'll be fine with editing the Canon files using Premiere Pro.

mic was ordered and received already, and after quick test (replay video on camera) was pretty good

i asked for advice here: https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/dslr-microphone-sub-£30-options.604816/

he bought Takstar 698

will be doing some video editing in few weeks so will be able to tell how good/bad that mic is :)

not top of the range mic, dont get me wrong.... but for the money i thought it was pretty good... still to confirm i need import everything to premiere pro :)

Anything will be better than the internal audio!

Best of luck with it.

Magic Lantern's almost a must to use a Caon DSLR for video.

Out of the box there's no zebras, peaking, WFM or decent audio level monitoring.

Just wish they'd add one button whitebalance.

will it make huge difference? as camera is not mine i don't want start messing with it.... and my friend not really very technical at all....

videos will be taken with continous lighting and white background (it for youtube so sort of some products reviews etc)

With such a controlled environment it should be fine. ML just makes using the camera easier. Look forward to seeing what you edit and post on YouTube.

it's not gonna be anyhting too exited tho.... it's gonna be about the hair extensions :) as my friend has a shop so need to do some videos (she planning on doing a lot of them to drag some traffic and SEO).

Im currently trying to do a video intro (logo appearance) with after effects. so when my friend will choose the one she likes most i will share a link to it ;)
