Yes
Bit of a random question but I've just been asked to find out how many calories a person would need to consume each day to maintain their weight at 42st.

Any links, info, etc, much appreciated

Ok, not to worry I found a calc online... mods feel free to close/delete this thread, cheers!

Dare i ask why

im really curious now...

Heck of a lot, if they are moving their avoirdupois as well as maintaining it.

i'm curious too. I'd guess it to be around the 10-15k mark. Care to post a link to the online calc for us?

Well I can't go into details, it's something that's come up at the place my wife works at, they needed to know how many calories a person weighing 42st would need to consume in order to maintain their weight. Needless to say the person concerned swears they only eat a bit of goats cheese and drink just bottled water. In fact they need to be eating around 14 Big Macs each day

Haha. My 1st wife had a bit of a weight issue, though not 42st. She would claim similarly and then empty a handful of choc bar wrappers out of her coat pockets when she thought no one was looking. :cuckoo:

As a mate of mine said many years ago, you are what you put in your mouth. How very true...

does the person mean a cheese goat not goat cheese?

NOT TRUE.

You're not taking into account any medical conditions, those known about and those unknown/undiagnosed.

If the person mentioned is entirely serious they need to seek medical advise fast. There are many reasons for this, including one of the most serious which should be ruled out ... pituitary tumor.

I eat less than the daily recommended amount for someone of my age, and yet I still gain weight, and I am 38st +. Don't be so quick to judge until you know all the facts. The first thing I would show for this person, is genuine concern. Taking the p**s or calling them a liar is not a very nice thing to do...

I think I'll stop there, as I won't be able to hold my tongue further than that otherwise.

Don't hold your tongue on account of me Jo. I'm more than capable of defending my rhetoric. What I will add to my previous post is I quite agree with you regarding medical conditions. These are however often the exception than the rule and I therefore stand by my original comment as a rule of thumb.

I would also add that when medical conditions apply, as they have done with my mother, the effect on that person can be quite distressing. In her case it is an effect of her medication rather than a direct medical cause. So... it is true it is what she puts in her mouth has affected her weight.

Finally, where did it mention taking the p or calling them a liar? Me thinks you are trying to add a dimension to this thread to suit your own cause. That's not nice either. I can assure you I would not assume anything with you but I do wonder if your comments are born of your own experiences? If so, I can only relate and sympathise as i'm one ugly MF and have often been discriminated against for that reason alone. It kinda sucks but you learn to ignore and disregard those people.

Now I must stop there too, before people mistake me with a certain person from the north west ;)

Ps: If you want to labour this topic further with me please take it to PM. :)

Hepburn it wasn't directed at you. The above two quotes are what I would consider a p**s take and more or less calling someone a liar. It infuriates me. Sometimes I just see red when anything like this comes up for obvious reasons ... I don't even need to explain them I don't think. Everywhere you turn people are making assumptions about it, without knowing the facts. Much the same way they did with anorexics before that was labeled an illness.

As far as medical conditions are concerned, I think you will find you're quite wrong. Because when it comes to morbid obesity, it is more or less a medical condition in the way of it being an eating disorder, if the person is simply gaining weight out of 'choice'. Can you really say that anyone in their right mind would 'choose' to be morbidly obese? I could list many many reasons and medical conditions that would also cause morbid obesity, or at least make it VERY difficult for the sufferer to lose the weight.

Meh... this is just silly. I'm going to stop because at the end of the day, I don't think I'll change anyone's way of thinking. At least not in my life time.

Ignorance is bliss to the beholder, but poison to the receiver. I should know, it's killing me.

Oh dear... the big mac comment was to put in context just how much 7000 calories is.

Again, I can't go into details but sufficed to say the medical aspect of the situation has been fully explored, it was the first thing looked at. I don't have all the facts but it appears to be a terribly sad case of someone caught in a vicious circle. The person concerned is now in care and everything is being done to help them. The question of calories was raised simply because someone wondered exactly how much the person needed to be eating to maintain that weight level.

Weight is a funny thing. My wife is a size six and always gets comments about never eating. Fact is she eats loads. and loads. and loads. She just can't put weight on. She's tried. She's had 2 kids. Nothing. never went to the gym. nothing Now she's not complaining, but the snide comments about food, bulimic jokes, and everyone watching her to see what she has left on her plate has left her paranoid. It is not the same as being Obese, but jokes about weight aren't funny, either way. My eldest daughter was born with a low birth weight because of a placenta problem in he womb and as such she is small. We always get asked if we have twins, even though the eldest is 2 1/2 years older than her sister, and she gets it at school as well. Again she eats and eats but has and probaby always will be small. She has been to have checks from specialists about it, and they have said she is fine, just little because of the pregnancy issues.. It would be nice in this day and age that appearance wasn't a problem and everyone was treated as an individual. can but hope.

My wife's probably a similar size. She worked out for years though in the course of her sport, and both her parents are rather small.
But I'm posting to highlight the comment about appearance; yes, it's a pity that regardless of how big or small someone is it very often seems to supercede who they are as an individual.
I suppose there's some sort of irony in discussing on a photography forum the aspect of how there's always more to someone or something than meets the eye.

Very ironic!!!

Just don't mention photoshop......:)

Dragging this thread back to life, I found out yesterday a typical day's menu for the person concerned.

Breakfast: 4 fried eggs on toast, cereal (2 or 3 bowls)
Lunch: Two tins of soup with a loaf of bread, sandwiches, crisps, toast, cakes
Dinner: A family sized pie, potatoes, ice cream.

Plus snacks throughout the day but no fruit or veg. The food bill for this person is £150 a week which includes "essentials" (their word) such as 5 tubs of ice cream (500ml size).

It's a terrible situation as the help needed is now on hold because the new place isn't able to provide any means to get the person out of the building if there's a fire. The current place is little more than a "hotel" that caters to the person's every whim with the council footing the bill. It just wrong in so many ways :(

I would tend to assume that the amount of calories need to maintain a weight is equal to the calories used per day. Getting to 42 st would need to involve a fair few calories though.

I dare say that there is a tipping point at which the person is too heavy to do any exercise and then they will start to pile it on.
