On a whim, I bought a cheapo storage box with a fold-down lid from Lidl the other day.

I'm planning to use it a storage box in my little cria's bedroom, so want to fix a soft-close mechanism to prevent trapped hooves.
From what I've seen, the two options open to me are a friction support or a gas strut. What would the experts recommend? My handiwork skills are limited, but I can operate a drill and screwdriver.
Sort of thing I've seen;
Friction support

Re: the box, the lid shouldn't be very heavy - couple of kilos max. It's about 73cmx40cm.
