Just flicking through the horses in the local rag...........

I often pick some out purely by name, and rarely bet on them...... however can someone please explain something.

"3.20 pm. Ladbrokes World Hurdle. Grade 1. Class 1. £260,000 added 4yo plus 3m Penalty Valuen £148,226. "

Now my understanding from that is starts at 3.20, sponsored by Ladbrokes and the event is called the World Hurdle. I assume from the G1 C1, it's for clever horses over 4 yr's who can rum and jump.

I assume that the winning owner picks up £260,000?

What does the Penalty value mean?

On racecards the money listed is the called Owners prize. This is after a percentage deduction for trainer, jockey, stable staff etc.

In the press the money is often listed as the penalty value. This is the total money that the horse wins. In future races if their are weight penalties for prizemoney won then this is the value the authorities use, hence penalty value.

thanks, but being thick, I still don't get it.

Did the horse today win £260,000 or £148,000

If the latter where did the other £112,000 go? trainers? jockeys? stables?

To the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and sixth horses ( not the horses themselves, the owners :)

ah get it now.
Ta.

It will soon be the Grand National! I don't normally bet on horses as sometimes it looks like horses raced during the week are just out for a jog and of course gamblings a mugs game but will have a flutter on the National. Is it too early to give a tip Lynton?

Sorry, I missed your second post. Glad you have it now :)

I'm really looking forward to the national. My horse was right at the front until nearly the end last year. Then it ran out of steam..Boooo! Way too early for tips as yet!

Much too early. My horse last year refused to start! I hear it is now glue.
