I'm in Manchester city centre this Saturday and would like to visit some camera shops to take a look at some Canon kit, particularly a 300mm lens, the new 100mm IS macro lens and at some Manfrotto/Gitzo tripods.

Can you local guys recommend any shops which carry this gear please? (apart from Jesssops of course)

Thanks in advance for your help

Calumet :)

It's 2 mins walk from Picadilly Station. If you come out of the front doors of the station and turn left down the hill and past the McDonald Hotel you come to a fairly major road junction under the flyover. Go straight across that junction and there is a little industrial estate on your left. You should see the Calumet name on the back of their unit.

There is also a Jacobs and an LCE but Calumet should be on your list :) You can always give them a call beforehand to check they have the items in stock.

I know you said "apart from Jessops" but felt I had to contribute this bit of advice: -

There is a Jessops on Princes Street near to the Town Hall, but it's one of the smallest shops in Manchester, and given their reputation for running down stock, can't really recommend you go out of your way to it!

Yes, couldn't understand why they shut the Deansgate shop which was a decent size and space to walk round in and seemed usually well stocked. Surely, a big city should have a flagship store

The landlord wanted to double the rent at the end of the tenancy agreement apparently! Now he is getting sod all.. :cuckoo:

There is also an Alladin's cave of a shop on a small business park near the Stagecoach bus depot on Hyde Road... I forget it's name! It's great to pick up some 2nd hand bargains though - might fit your tripod needs :)

I've heard of a shop called The Real Camera Company in Lever St, near Piccadilly, which by the sound of it is mainly second hand gear and was wondering if anyone was familiar with this shop.

You're right about the Deansgate branch of Jessops. It was a great shop and the staff I spoke to were knowledgeable, and catered for all my darkroom needs. A shame.

Just to add another shop, there's Wildings on Deansgate (opposite to where Jessops used to be), but haven't been here for years so don't know what their stock levels are like.

Yep I am. I know a few people who have ben in there and bought stuff. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable and it is like going into a museum loads and loads of used stuff, don't think they do anything new apart from batteries and film.

Oh and not sure but I don't think they take any credit cards, but you'd have to check on that.

The only down side i found when I went in there in the summer was I thought some of there prices were a bit on the high side, but I did not try and haggle.

Thank you for that Knikki, it sounds like camera heaven to me. I'll have a wander in when I'm in Manchester within the next few days.

This is a great thread, since I work in the city!

I go to LCE quite often for checking gear, but let me warn you the service is very rubbish these days. I got served by a polish guy who did not have a single idea what I was asking him. The whole shop is dingy expensive and a bit out of date.

I remember a couple of years ago the LCE was a great friendly place with great staff wanting to help you out.

When I worked in Manchester just over 20 years ago, there used to be one on Oldham Street called Fred Ash Cameras. I've noticed they're still listed on the UK camera database, so that may be worth a look.
