Hi there

Bought an OM2n in the classifieds here recently - and I've checked with the seller that it's ok to ask about the problem here as we're both stumped.

So the issue is that when I attach the OM 28mm lens to the OM2n and look through the viewfinder, its as if there is a black frame within the viewfinder - not solid black but sort of see-through. Its also changes as you look through the view finder from different angles.

However, when I attach the 135mm lens, it all looks completely normal.

Both lenses are fine on the OM4.

I can't see anything obvious on the finder, the mirror or in the camera body - hence why we're stumped.

The only thing I can think of having looked at it again just now is that maybe its the type of focus screen that is fitted - its matt with cross-hairs in the middle (the one in the OM4 is more traditional with split image etc.).

Looking at the mirror with no lens attached the image reflected onto the mirror is correct with no blacking out.

I'm not sure if I've described what I can see through the viewfinder that well so do ask if you need more.

So any ideas or thoughts? Is it worth trying a different focus screen?

Thanks a lot

Well I can't tell you what it is but let's see if I can help in any way.

Now, both lenses are Olympus make? and you don't have the same issue on your OM4?

Have you had a film through yet and does this show up on film?

Is it the same at all f-stops and focal lengths?

I can replicate your kit with the exception of the cross-hair focus screen.

The focus screens should be compatible in both bodies so swapping them over will establish whether the screen is the cause.

Just one more thing, if your camera is empty and you set the shutter speed to B, you can then view the effect with the shutter held open: and can you see it if you look through the open back and lens?

Thanks chaps

I think the issue is to do with the focus screen - it vignettes the display in the viewfinder and is for a more specialist application than regular photography.

So I'll have to hunt down a new/different focus screen now. That should solve the issue.

Have certainly learnt something about the OM system here - have never looked at different focus screens before.

Thanks
