Calling all Sony Alpha users! (Part 5)

I'm looking to go from the a580 to the a77 but i'm not sure whether or not to go body only or the a77 with the 16-50 Sony f/2.8 as I already have the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8.

I had to make the same choice when upgrading from my A55. The A77 with kit lens cost me £350 more than body only but I sold my Tamron for £190 and will also claim £100 cashback from Sony so it's really only cost me a additional £60 for the 16-50mm 2.8

Has anyone tried Kenko AF tubes with a 105mm sigma macro or similar? I quite fancy trying some higher magnification macro but the sigma 105 is only 1 to 1. How far will extension tubes extend this and what are the consequences with aperture limits?

Someone I know has just got an mpe-65 which I guess is the only reason anyone buys a canon ;)

What confuses me is whether with a crop sensor it is still 1 to 1 or whether it changes with the change in focal length compared to using it on FF.

the subject image size doesn't vary with the crop though - just the surrounding area (i.e. fov)?

I've clearly got confused :)

I'm still assuming extension tubes might be a cheaper answer to improving macro magnification. Not sure how many or of what size I'd need to double the magnification.

Or a raynox doofer perhaps??

I can't help with the tubes, but maybe you might like to try one of these for super close up

http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/Minolta-AF-3x-1x--1.7-2.8-Macro_lens199.html

They don't come up for sale that often though.

One on ebay for £1400 at the moment (with a dedicated flash and some other bits and bobs) from a Japanese seller, plus import duty and VAT. I think I've seen them for about half that, but macro isn't my thing so I don't pay much attention.

I'm sure that 1 of the main UK s/h dealers had one recently for ~£8-900.
However, I also seem to recall comments (probably on Dyxum) from those that have 1 that they are very specialist, not easy to handle etc. etc. - more of a studio beast than Canon's mpe-65.

Thanks for the replies guys, looks like it will be the a77~ 16-50 combo.

Just another quick question, I have the sigma 70-200 f/2.8 (not the os model)....will this have any issues with the a77 like some lenses have had?

You actually take photographs? I thought your kit was ornamental? :p

I actually joined to pester you on both forums for the Sigma 100-300mm f4...

It's okay, you just keep rubbing it in. I'm sure Jim wouldn't notice if you sold it.

Have you tried the TC on it?

By-the-way, I am contemplating the 70-400mm G too... :bang:

No I've not used the TC yet but will do so when I use the lens at Knockhill in a few weeks time at the BTCC. After that I need to hand it back :(

70-400 G would be lovely. The 70-300G was fantastic when I used it.

Yes a lovely price too, they go for £900-£1100 second-hand. :(

I wouldn't buy a new one, not with the replacement due to be announced in 6-8 months.

I've not noticed him here - but then he's not been active for a while elsewhere (until recently) so I could just have failed to spot his latest pseudonym.

His current love affair is with the Minolta AF 300/2.8 APO HS G.

Controversial rumour on sonyalpharumors that the A99 is going to have an ISO hot-shoe.

I remember the wailing and gnashing of teeth that accompanied his search for a replacement for his previous 300 /2.8 - lost count of how many different lenses he tried, and (not surprisingly) nothing came close.

Remove the lens, wipe the lens contacts and body contacts, hopefully it'll stop showing that error.

if you have cleaned up the contacts then it will need a repair, maybe worth upgrading instead of forking out the cash ?

Have you tried turning SSS off? Long shot, but try it.

How about removing the battery for a few hours? (I don't know how long the capacitors retain their charge for).
