Calling all Sony Alpha users! (Part 5)

No doubt its a great camera, I do like the evf/slt.

Anyway, shut up or else I am going to end up buying one! :)

Went from an A900 to the 77 and get on fine with it, love the evf  I use a lot of manual lenses and find the focus peaking a real boon, already got funds set aside for the A99 when it puts in an appearance come Autumn and if the rumors are correct the evf is better again, just hope that Sony get it right out of the box first time and don't suffer problems like the D800 and the Canon mk111

I'm really thinking about upgrading my a700. Is the a77 a worthy upgrade or should I go full frame and go for the a850 or a900?

I recently upgraded from the A700 to a s/h A900, and absolutely love it - it's just like the A700 but bigger and better! The controls are all where you expect them, it's a very easy switch to make (except on the wallet, as you now need to switch any DT lenses to FF equivalents)

Wow that's well cheap, how comes its so cheap?

Basically I have a few options. Upgrade to either a850 or a900 secondhand which I presume I should see improvement over my a700 but is the technology quite old in these compared to the a77? Also got added expense of getting ff lenses.

Second option is to go for a77

Third is to wait out for the a99. Is this gonna be full frame and when is the release date?

If it were you upgrading from the a700 what would you do?

Oh well I'm thinking yes time for pupgrade a450 to a77 or a 99 mmmmmmmm........

Is it (a77) anygood , I supose what I'm getting at is just because it's new does it mean its any good or is it just natural progression ?

wish i could afford an upgrade, but will stick to my a900 for now

I am curious to know what you would upgrade to from an alpha A900. I thought the 900 was bascially the top end body you could get in FF as a Sony user ? unless of course you are thinking of selling up and switching over to cannikon ?

i was just joking about...although i may be tempted by the a99,IF i could afford to get one

New firmware update available for the A77 and A65 available now,
It will expand the number of automatic compensation lenses, improve repsonse for auto review, front dial, rear dial and between power SW operation and power off and AF lag with 500mm F4 G SSM,
whatever all that means!

Apologies for this Sony just sent me an email its 1.05 which has been out for ages!!

Anyone? Not sure if to go for the jessops clearance.

Why not? It has a warranty and the SoG Act still applies. I would assume the camera was "as new" and be prepared to return it if not.

Anybody know how weather proof the A77 is? need to to take some pictures tonight but its raining. I know I could cover it in plastic bags etc but I really need to get at the controls quickly

cheers

Seems I've waited too long, deal has gone from jessops :-( 949 is cheapest, still not a bad price.

They've just started doing 10 months 0% on sony gear. Might be worth a punt on that instead :) Would at least be brand new and not ex demo or return.

There where doing 10 months quite a while back, but not really advertising the fact, I first found out in Feb where they said it had been 10 months for some time..

I used it myself in March, which allowed me to keep the money in my savings.

The a57 sensor results are now on DxOmark. Long story short; it scores the same as the a55, as you would expect.

Hi anyone help need a eye viewer lost mine and am going away tomorrow any suggestions ?Sony a450 its the not you cushion your rye against ,

Quiet here
Have been looking at reviews of the a57 and most seem pretty positive, biggest neg being the view finder and "only" 16mp. Anyone tried the 57. Cheers

I've had one for a few weeks. Upgraded from an a55, with both being primarily used as backup to an a850. Was aiming to get an a77, but was put off by noise at higher ISO's.

I'm very happy with it. The improvements over the a55 are individually fairly small, but overall the net effect is a much better camera IMO.

Anything specific you need to know?

Few reviews I have read mentioned lower noise in the A57

How do you find the view finder compared with an optical view finder.

Currently have a panasonic G3 and guess the A57 view finder is better, need to make the effort and find a shop to check it out.

Did you get the 18-55 lens.
Cheers

I got mine body only, but I've had the kit lens before. It's okay, but obviously there are many many better lenses.

I grudgingly bought the a55, despite it's EVF, because I wanted video AF. The first time I tried it, in a shop, I hated it. Two weeks after buying one I finally "got it" and now much prefer using an EVF to the OVF in my a850. Sure it's not as pretty a view, but the EVF wins on functionality by miles.

I guess EVFs aren't for everyone, but I'm a convert. Can't wait for a FF SLT.

the standard Sony UK warranty is 1 year for either new or these refurbs.
Nothing to stop you taking out an extended warranty or indeed if necessary potentially use the Sale of Goods Act (fit for purpose, durability etc.) outside that.
The standard Canon, Nikon & Pentax European warranties are also 1 year only albeit Nikon UK has a promotional 2 year warranty on bodies requiring registration.

I am led to believe that all products have a 2 years EU warranty but its not well documented and not liked by retailers as you would expect !

EU directive 1999/44/EC states 'A two-year guarantee applies for the sale of all consumer goods everywhere in the EU. In some countries, this may be more, and some manufacturers also choose to offer a longer warranty period.'
http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/shopping/shopping-abroad/guarantees/index_en.htm
& the official EU warranty for Canon, Nikon et al is still 1 year meaning that you would still probably have to fight your case with the seller (not the manufacturer).

However, the UK afaik didn't fully adopt it arguing that the SOGA already gave you longer coverage (up to 6 years in England & Wales, 5 in Scotland).

TurnipFarmer - just keep checking & it will come back into stock sometime.
