Calling all Sony Alpha users! (Part 3)

Well I've ordered myself a compact camera to keep me going when the DSLR is too big and heavy to carry about, worringly its a Canon!

But don't worry my ties aint cut quite yet (despite considering moving formats, I was wondering if Landscape is suited to another make better especially as on a dull day I am seeing noise due to low light), I have finally ordered myself a CZ 16-80mm. Unfortunately it has gone out of stock at Jessops so I'm going to have to wait. I was biding my time hoping for it to go on sale but with no luck, it was in stock this morning and when I got home from work it had sold out, rather annoying.

All I need to do now is buy a Sony A700 for sub £500 which is looking rather impossible...I fear its replacement will be full frame rendering the CZ 16-80mm useless....

Most of the rumours are that the A700 direct replacement will be a top end APS-C body like a Nikon D300 or Canon 7D as Sony have nothing there to compete with them right now.

Based on pricing of the Nikon/Canon I would expect a new A7xx to be £1100-£1300 with the next body up the A850 remaining at the £1600 mark, I reckon my next body will be FF too, need to start buying FF lenses instead of just cropped ones!!!!

Hey i recently got an A230 as an introductory cam for xmas (im a noobie lol) so thought i would tag along in the thread, im still getting used to using the slr but i guess its all about practice and learning :)

All the best

Dan

I have just received my A900 and so far I am loving it. The pictures quality is really good as expected if not better. I have not been able to get my Flash to trigger when on Wireless mode in the camera. I have two one is the Sony 42 and the Metz 58, both are Sony shoe connection (of course). When I start the Metz though it says that it is a slave although no other flash is connected.

However, if I connect each separately to the Camera they shoot normally as they are supposed to do.

Your inputs and help are appreciated.

Now xmas is virtually over and had my sony a330 for christmas it time for the introduction to d-slr and learning how my kit works and how to get the best results. The bug of buying extras has already kicked in. Brought a spare battery, and a cheap 150cm tripod to steady shots and looking at lens extenders as i can afford new lens at the moment. have taken a few pics and very pleased so far just got to get my head round apperture, shutter speed etc. Its slowly sinking in. Hope everyone had good xmas.

The a900 has no on-board flash (hence no flash controller)

Take a look at:
http://www.md-sulhan.com/alphastrobist/58amrev9.html

For supported a900 off camera flash configurations. edit: the HVL-F20AM has 'master controller' functionality but the HVL-F42AM doesn't.
(see: http://www.mhohner.de/sony-minolta/flashes.php)

Also, take a look at this thread: http://www.dynaxdigital.com/index.php/topic,12036.0.html

I got one too, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

can anyone help?

i bought me a new dell laptop for a chrimbo pressie and when i installed the alpha software my computer crashed (within 4 hours of buying it) and realised that my windows 7 OS is 64-BIT which the software isnt compatible with so i have had to completely reinstall the computer but am fed up that the software isnt compatible. is there a compatible version out there? has anyone else had the same problem?

Yep, I had a nightmare installing it from the disc using Windows 7 64 bit. Try downloading the software directly from the Sony website rather than from the CD. http://support.sony-europe.com/dime/index.aspx?site=odw_en_GB

It worked for me eventually (with Windows 7 64 bit). Just uninstall as much of the previous versions you can and it should work.

Well I had a go with the Tammy 70-300 today but its going back tommorrow just not impressed with it and I will be on the lookout for a Beercan now, I think its the best option in the price range I am looking at.
My lens lineup is going to be Sony 16-105, Sony 11-18, a 50mm, trying to sell my brand new Sony f1.8 for fund a Beercan and battery but will try and pickup a Minolta 50mm again I think.
Going to add a Beercan to that, a set of ND and ND Grads, although probably not until Feb/March, I don't see the need just now its not bright enough!
Also would like to add a battery grip, and I have seen somewhere selling brand new for £199 including a Sony Battery!
Long term the only other thing I would add is a flashgun methinks.

Anyone thinks that the Minolta 24-85mm F3.5-4.5 lens worth 99 pounds to get?
Cause I heard the quality of image is not that bad and also I am thinking of getting the 35-70mm F4 but cant find it anywhere yet.
But if 24-85mm is good as well I might not getting the 35-70mm F4
Please comment on both lenses I mentioned, would like to make a go for the 24-85mm if the price is right.

Thanks
Kevin

I've been using it on a Dell laptop since the W7 RC - what version of IDC are you using?

Thats where I've ordered mine from but its out of stock. Quite annoying really as it was in stock earlier in the day. Its been floating in and out of stock for the last month, usually comes backe in stock quick and with how much you save vs other places its worth the wait and chances are you'll get a recent copy!

camerapricebuster.co.uk is useful for looking.

Thanks for the price update..Currently out of cash as bought some other lenses.
Will buy it sometime later.

Granty - if Lowestoft still have it in stock now, try and ring them and see if it would be able to send to your store near to and pay over your store near to and take over there. ;)

Hey Guys,
is there any reasons to upgrade to a A200 from An A100 apart from the increase in ISO? I've been offered a good deal on an almost new A200 but, this means selling the 100 which i'm really happy with.
Any advice or if you have personally upgraded to the same, your knowledge would be most helpful!
Cheers Andy

To be honest I think that from what most folk say the A100 was a better camera overall than the A200!

Hey Chris....

How long will that be before you change to FF judging by previous comings and goings !!!

Personally I would be happiest with the A100.

And how overpriced is THAT!

my thoughts exactly,marc...

okay, just come back from a walk to the local park with my grandson and wife..took the camera with me "just in case",and occasionally the AF just seemed to freeze,ie:not work at all when i depressed the shutter button halfway.but if i switched the camera off, then back on...all is fine again..until it repeats the problem again..any ideas?

I found my A700 doing that with the Tammy 70-300 although I suspect it was the lens as no other lens seemed to be affected.

I might do we'll see, I'm not in a big rush now, it wont be in time for my day out of photography on Sunday so it can wait. Rather have a brand new copy than one thats been sat for a while, possibly ex display?

Quick query, aside from the better build and FF compatibility is there much IQ different between the Minolta 50mm f1.7 and Sony 50mm f1.8?
thought that you have had both?
I doubt that there is much in it (of course you also get sample variation so the worst of 1 versus the best of the other could be noticeable) but if anything I would expect the 30 year newer design to be slightly better?
