Calling all Sony Alpha users! (Part 3)

Merry Christmas

I have the Bigma lens 50-500, Sigma 18-250 and the Sigma 10-20 will they work with the Sony A900, given so many confusing reports can anyone who have used or no something about it advise if they will work. Someone informed if I use lenses that are not designed for the A900 due to its powerful supposedly engine it may grind the said lenses AF mechanism teeth.

When searched these lenses it did not specify that these lenses are not designed for the A900 instead it mentioned that they are compatible with the Sony Alpha model.

You comments and support is highly appreciated. My apologies for diverting from the subject.

As i have heard the tamron 10-24 is not as good as others. cause I used Tokina 12-24 with my nikon D90 before. and result are very good even in wide open aperature shots.

A good start would be to look at the reviews on the dyxum lens database. It is an excellent Sony / Minolta mount resource.

afaik the 18-250 & 10-20 are both DCs i.e. crop format lenses.
Whilst they will work on an A850/A900 you won't get a FF image from them but the A850/A900 do have a mode for using crop format lenses (using just the APS-C sized portion of the sensor - iirc it's about the equiv. of a 12MP APS-C).

The 50-500 is a FF lens but is also a lens that certainly some have experienced AF gear teeth failure with on Alphas (a friend of mine had it happen twice on his & even though he is now a Canon shooter he still won't look at Sigma lenses).
 
what are you looking at those for?
I've not used the 30mm macro but the 28mm isn't the sharpest prime e.g. a Tamron 28-75/2.8 is comparable but more flexible (also dearer though).
The macro is APS-C only whereas the 28mm is FF.
The macro has SAM whereas the 28mm is screw-driven AF.
 
Ah yes, sorry Scott had the two up in front, I'm tracking a Minolta one on Ebay actually just now but I doubt I will win it! I think I would be better with something like a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 as I would like a faster lens for low light than my Sony 16-105 currently affords but wider tahn a 50mm, a zoom in that range might be a better compromise.

I am using A550 with the 30mm Macro.
The macro lens is quite a good piece of glass.
And currently now has 20 pounds off so can get it for 129 pounds inc cashback.
In Jessops, also can price match with others as I think Jessops is the cheapest.

I personally think if people use A700 would focus faster in darker place.
As my A550 need some hunting if I focus either very close to object or dark object. :bang:
 
Thanks Stan for the tips, I never use Raw but I have been told to many times, now I'll give it a try. Its lovely to see all these people who uses a Sony camera. I love my Sony.
 
Im in a similar situation, ive been thinking about a prime and was going to get the f1.8 50mm sony one but seen the 30mm f2.8 macro for not much more, not im not sure what one to go for.

I wish I can get the Sony 11-18mm for 249 pounds as Jacobs is doing it for 468 pounds. and cannot find a way to price match to 249 pounds :bang:
 
Does any use a sigma 70-200 2.8 on an A700 body if so
should I spend my money I can get it for about £630 + postage.

I believe the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 is meant to be a cracking lens but I think there is more than one version of it.

I'm thinking of selling mine and going back to a Sigma 10-20 is was my favorite lens on my on A300 and the older one (non HSM) is very cheap right now can be had for around £350)
Your right though the Sony 11-18 seems to be £399+ everywhere.

As ebay and here doesn't seem to have much.
Was planning to go for A700 but then on ebay arent that much and when I looked at ebay again there is none. so went for A550.
But then still want A700 though T.T
But might planned to get ultra wide angle, the 16-80 and a flash then mayb a A700 body or new version of it.

It's a cracking lens but it's not wide enough I prefer it over my old Minolta 50mm, it's now listed on Dyxum.

Dyxum and ebay. Some interesting / rare stuff comes up on dyxum occasionally as well as a fair amount of more run of the mill. Note that a lot is from the US but there are also many UK/EU based people selling. ebay is much more hit and miss, there's plenty for sale but interesting lenses do not go cheap.

I've also had s/h lenses from ffordes (always excellent service from them).

for those that dont understand;

1. sony creates a hotshoe adapter
2. radio triggers become compatible
3. next gen of sony cameras and flashes have this new hotshoe built in
4. everyones happy as the older gens can have the adapter and the new gen has it built in

I got a hotshoe adapter from ebay for a tenner.....having discovered the sony one was a complete fortune!
Job done.

Well I've ordered myself a compact camera to keep me going when the DSLR is too big and heavy to carry about, worringly its a Canon!

But don't worry my ties aint cut quite yet (despite considering moving formats, I was wondering if Landscape is suited to another make better especially as on a dull day I am seeing noise due to low light), I have finally ordered myself a CZ 16-80mm. Unfortunately it has gone out of stock at Jessops so I'm going to have to wait. I was biding my time hoping for it to go on sale but with no luck, it was in stock this morning and when I got home from work it had sold out, rather annoying.

All I need to do now is buy a Sony A700 for sub £500 which is looking rather impossible...I fear its replacement will be full frame rendering the CZ 16-80mm useless....
