Calling all Sony Alpha users! (Part 3)

Do we think the CZ 16-80mm is likely to go up in price at Jessops after crimbo or down? I know they had a good sale on last year.

I've got the money to buy it now, but would be more convenient to buy it after pay day really (22nd) but I'm also concious of the VAT increase and the fact after crimbo places dont have to be as competitive. I mean Jessops is at least £50 cheaper than anywhere else as it is!

Have yought about using quidco as well as buying it from Jessops? you should save yourself a few extra penies that way too.

I have a number of Sigma lenses for my Sony A380, while talking to my salesperson from Sony, he informed that the Sigma lenses don't work properly with some models of the Alpha family like the A900 and maybe others. Although I used them for some time, did not notice anything (I am not an expert), no doubt my lenses are designed for the Sony family.

Firs apologies for the diversion of topic, second, is this statement correct from the sales person, did anyone face such problems especially with regard to the auto focus feature either on the lens or camera. I surely didn't.

He might have meant lenses designed for crop sensor cameras, the A850 and A900 are full frame so need specific lenses......

mmm....i'm not aware of any sigma[sony/minolta fit]lens that won't fit on an alpha body and work as it should.the only problem i can see is if your using a wide angle lens on the full frame A850/900's is some vignetting.

i'm sure someone else will either confirm or correct me in due course.

It makes sense as the discussion was revolving around the 850 & 900, the difference and compatibility with existing lenses.

This brings out the question, if Sony is coming out with any new models more advanced than the A550 model, not looking for a professional model like the 850 or 900 but an upgrade to the 380, as the later has constraints for continuous shoot using the IR remote on a tripod it only works with the single shot mode, otherwise I have to do it manually which causing some shots to be blurred due to shaking.

The reason I am asking is that the current A550 according to some reports have some tweaking needed in comparison to its class.

The only Sigma lens I have in an ancient (but excellent) Sigma 24mm f/2.8 Super Wide II. This is probably 15 to 20 years old, but it works flawlessly on my A900

(actually this is a really nice lens)

Sigma won't pay to licence tech. protocols but instead try to reverse engineer. As a result of this whereas e.g. all Minolta AF lenses irrespective of age will work on any generation of Minolta AF or Sony Alpha body some (especially very old) Sigmas sometimes won't.
The other problem with some Sigmas is that their AF gear teeth are made of plastic that doesn't always survive the high-torque motors used in Alphas & teeth break meaning the lens will no longer AF.

May I know is it 249 pounds for the 11-18?
As on ebay they all like 400+ pounds..

It certainly is, I was surprise by the price but it has been discontinued by Sony, Jessops have a habit of severly discounting anything that is no longer being produced, the Sony 24-105 can also be found very cheaply now.

The rumours are that there will be a Sony badged version of the Tamron 10-24 at some point next year to replace the 11-18.

I wandered into the local Jessops next to my work and bought a Sony 50mm f1.8 as my Christmas pressie to myself! Well chuffed with it and I can wait to get home on Friday to give it a go, staff were lovely in the shop.

Does anyone know if Cokin P filters are wide enough for a Sony 11-18?

O right that must be the cheapest ultra wide angle lens that can buy.
Although I haven't got a sony DSLR yet. but will get a A700/A550 once I sold my old kit.
Hope there will be one 11-18mm selling around cheap..

Yeah its certainly cheaper than anything else, probably the best value although the older Sigma 10-20 is around £350.

I would try and get one soon if you want one as they are going out of stock in a lot of places.

But I don't have the budget yet
As my tamron is niot sol
5d is not sold and I still have a blackerry 8900 to sell as well to fund everything
So I have got no money yet
But then anyone compared the old sigma 10-20 to this sony?

if they have one there, could they reserve it?if so,i could pick it up for you on monday next week[as i'm up in london on sunday and monday with the missus-hospital appointment],and post it on to you if that would help...but i would need the cost of the lens plus postage in advance, payed by bank transfer into my bank account.

Thanks for your kind offer but it seems in the last 20mins they've sold their last one. (not sure how true that is but he did saw they only had 1 left)

Damn it

damn shame that...might be worth trying as many stores as you can contact.give cardiff store a try on 0845 458 7067.

I phoned Jessops main office and basically got told none of the stores are set up for phone payment only reserve and collect

Anyone out there using the A550, I would like to have some feedback on the quality and overall performance of the camera. Is it worth the change from an A380 to an A550 ?

Or

Should I wait till Sony comes out with a newer model maybe next year, pass the time with the A380 ?

Or Cut it short and move to the A850, need a lot to learn !!! if anyone is using it ?

I am thinking of buying a Sigma EF 530 DG ST flash for my A350. Sigma tell me that I will get full TTL with the flash. Anyone tell me any different?
Is anyone/has anyone used one and what are your opinions.

Cheers

Chris

A small number of old Sigma lenses for the Minolta AF mount require re-chipping before Sony DSLRs will detect them. The camera simply thinks there is no lens attached. There are some old Tokina lenses also affected.

Those affected attach to the camera fine but when you turn the camera on it claims no lens is attached.

Yep, I've had a Tokina 70-200 AF that would do that. Worked fine on my old Minolta 7000 AF but not on anything more modern (inc Dynax film bodies)

Can also highly recommend the minolta 50mm f1.7, superb lens for the money, also got mine from the bay of e.

This lens has been holding a fairly high second hand value, but recently has dropped price due to the introduction of the Sony 50mm f1.8. Therefore, it is a good time to be looking for a copy.

The build quality of the 1.7 is very good, and very sharp compared to the kit lens. 1.4 is nice as I had a play, but was just too much to justify extra expense for me.

Hi,

Just wondering if any of you have tried the Travor Vg b30-am battery grip, at £70 it is around the price that my good lady wants to spend on a chrimbo pressie for me;)

Looks very similar to the Sony, but half the price,

Appreciate your help
