Calling all Sony Alpha users! (Part 3)

Don't look at the A5xx bodies as "much lower" they are just an extension of the entry level cameras that Sony produce. The RRPs aren't loads more than the A350 was when that was released.....

When I handled the A550 I thought it felt very solid for an entry level camera. It was lighter than I expected but the one I held only had a 50mm on it......

Doesn't look like too many people on here have bought the new Sony cameras. I was sort of expecting a small rush of new Sony owners, obviously I was wrong! (again)

One of the main issues has been the availability of the A500/550. Been waiting for mine for nearly 6 weeks, just got a call they are in but unfortunately cant get there until Christmas Eve. Not a new user though - circuitary that drives the HSM gone in my A100 so its a replacement, will use the A100 as a backup for the none HSM lenses.

Yeah I wasn't that impressed with the A5xx series, I am not disputing the features although I have read some reviews that described image quality as average.

It just wasn't an A700, it feels nice to hold its a big size compared to the A2xx/A3xx but it felt dead plasticky, I'm, just glad I was able to get an A700 or I would not have come back over to Sony,

Yeah the A700 is a cracking camera. Especially in comparison to the A500. Glad I'm selling mine though as it's not really for me :) I just love me A200 more :p And hopefully by the time I've worn my A200's shutter out, Sony will have gotten their act together and put some more decent SLRs on the market!

Well I may have just waited and saved for the A850 but its more likely I would have gone to Nikon, that said I am chuffed to bits with the second A700, my 16-105 and 11-18 are probably better than any of the lenses I had with my previous one!

The deed is done! The A700 is gone! I don't know whether to be happy or sad :p Sold it for 450 cash without the official charger (included a third party charger). I originally paid 450 with no charger (was 499 in Currys which was an amazing deal anyway but they quoted 50 quid for an official Sony charger (the only model left was the allocated display model which had never been on display but the charger had gone missing so no one had bought it) so I managed to get that off :D) so I've only made about a 10 pounds loss from the purchase of the third party charger and despite me not losing much it's still a very nice deal for the guy who bought it! Seen the bodys in good condition go for up to 550 on ebay! I've only taken it out twice. Once was to Cheddar and the other time to Witham nature reserve.

It's a shame I didn't get on with it better to be honest as it's a very nice camera. All it's done since I've got it is sit in a bag. Well now my money problems are temporarily sorted! I now have 450 quid to upgrade my PC/transfer into Dollars for America, and I've only made a small loss! My A200 will do me for another few years :D

if you read e.g. the DPReview review they are very impressed with the sensor but less so by Sony's jpeg engine which they say does it no favours (hardly news surely although Sony should have got the message by now ...) & suggest shooting RAW.

my 16-105 and 11-18 are probably better than any of the lenses I had with my previous one!
you wouldn't listen to my recommendations then ... :p

Yeah I have heard the jpeg output isn't great,
I should have bought some of the Minolta stuff you suggested before Scott!

u talking about the jpeg output of the A700?? nout wrong with it! its all a shoot in for the MX.... its just as good as RAW really IMO;)

Sony's jpeg engine (particularly at higher ISOs) is relatively poor in every body imo (& lots of others).

so if you were buying a first dslr (i'm thinking about it) you would buy a a700 rather than the a550 would you ???
.....and would you buy a sony if you didn't already have the kit or would you go for a different make .

why weren't you happy with yours George?

Can anyone recommend a 35mm-ish lens I can use with my A350?

The 50mm f/1.8 lens is almost perfect but it is a bit too long for a crop sensor sometimes.

Looking for something that gives good image quality at around f/4. Big maximum aperture is a bonus, but this will be mostly for use around f/4 or f/5 so as long as it's sharp at those apertures I don't need anything fast.

A prime would be fab, but a zoom is OK too.

The only lens I have to cover 35mm at the moment is the 18-70, and the quality of that isn't great, so something similar but sharp would be good.

Price: Is it possible for under £50? Age/cosmetic condition not a big issue.

I picked up a A550 this week in pc world in dublin and it just feels cheap and nasty compared to the solid feel of an A700, even the A100 was better built than the newer sonys. And where did they get the idea for having the wheel flat into the body so its really hard to adjust now?
Personally if you can find one get an A700 i havent regretted upgrading from my A100 for one, although im still working on my panning shots that I could nail with the A100 have been a bit trickier to get right so far, but i guess thats the diff between the 16,000 frames ive shot with my a100 to the 3-4000 ive done with my A700 so far.

Well, there's really nothing to fault at all on the A700. I sold it because it was a bit too big for me and I sort of needed the money. I didn't like the size and weight increase over the A200 and it was a bit awkward for the type of shooting I do. In terms of image quality at low iso's, the A200 and the A700 are pretty much identical. What you get with the A700 over the A200 is a much more solid body (magnesium and aluminium!) better high ISO performance (not really THAT useful for me as I pretty much exclusively shoot in ISO 100) higher frames per second (I don't do much 'sport' photography so this wasn't that useful to me) but other than that, not a lot. I didn't feel like it was a worthwhile upgrade over my A200 as at the end of the day I was getting pretty much the same results with the A700 than the A200. This is why I decided to sell it and perhaps in a few years when I feel I've outgrown the A200 I'll get another Sony (as long as they've gotten their act together! If they haven't then I'm switching to Canon or Nikon ). I don't like Sonys new offerings at all. The A500 I held in Chelmsford Currys Digital felt plasticky and really cheap, even in comparison to my A200! I can't stress how much better the A700 is than the A500/550 though. It's a night and day difference.

If you don't mind the bigger size the A700 is fantastic however! I sold it not because I didn't like it, it's a very nice camera, but simply because it was a bit big and I didn't think it was a worthwhile upgrade from my A200 for me. Now the 450 I've gotten from selling the A700 shall buy me many nice things :) Including a major computer upgrade! Phenom II 965 Black Edition here I come!

IMHO the A200 is an amazing camera. I love mine to bits and I will never ever sell it!

Can anyone recommend a 35mm-ish lens I can use with my A350?

You'll be hard pressed to find something under 50 quid that'll surpass the 18-70 in quality. I personally recommend my favourite lens which is the Minolta 28mm F2.8 :D On my A200 it's the perfect lens. They go for around 70 to 90. The extra money over 50 quid is worth it, no doubt.

thanks george....i'll go and research a200 s then...its difficult theres no camera shop here....and i thought the 550 looked good from the spec...was looking at a friends a900 today but thats a bit more than i want to pay

Might be difficult to find a new a200 or a700 as both are now been discontinued. .

There is an A700 body for sale near me. It is a display model, and is out in the open where customers can touch it, but has a lens mount cap on (how many people have removed it?). They want £490 for it, but I reckon that I could haggle, and get a lot of extras (battery, 4gb card, decent case) thrown in.
Do I feel lucky?

Well, do I?

It may be the last one in the country!!!!!!!!

Mine was a display model (although it had never been on display, so it wasn't really... Just allocated as one) and I got it for 450 and that was a bargain! That was when Currys were selling them for 499 and they only had the 'display model' left but no one had bought it because the charger had gone missing and I managed to knock 50 quid off for that reason :) Also, are you sure you really want an A700? I bought mine on a whim and because it was a really really good bargain but ended up preferring my A200.

Might be difficult to find a new a200 or a700 as both are now been discontinued. .

The A700s are like gold dust now and so are A200s to be honest. I've seen a few A200s sell for over the odds recently :( Currys had them for 249.99 recently but every Currys I've been in recently hasn't had any of the old models in. They've all gone I think  Second hand bodys are always a good option though.

Actually, this is something that worries me a little. What happens if my A700 has to be replaced? Yes, I'm insured, but if it breaks beyond repair or is stolen, what will it be replaced by? I'm sure the insurance company isn't going to stump up for an A850 or A900.

I suppose the best option would be to get the money for the A700 (should be possible?) and then look for a 2nd hand A700 with not many actuations. You could probably save some serious cash this way.

A700s (if you can find one) at current prices are an absolute bargain for what you get.

for £50 I doubt it unless you buy a manual focus lens & an adapter.

Minolta 28/2.8? - you probably won't get 1 of those even s/h for £50 but should be doable ~£90
there's the new Sony 30/2.8 macro - with the current cashback that should be ~£129 net.
Minolta 24-85/3.5-4.5 probably ~£110 (disclosure - I have 1 fs in the classifieds section)
Tamron or KM28-75/2.8 but that will be nearer £200 than £100

They might do actually. I had a Nikon 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S replaced with a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 AF-S as they older lens had been replaced.

Maybe it would be more tricky right now until the A700 actually has a proper replacement though.

That is what I thought, and if I am going to take my photography to the next level (making money), then I will require two bodies (preferably the same). I also like the construction, size and weight of the A700.

Andy

If I was to have to replace a camera though insurance then I would want a new camera if I'm honest, but maybe that's just me. I'll just have to be extra careful until Sony finally bring out the replacement.

Andy700, that was exactly my thinking and why I bought the second A700 earlier this year.

same here...when i got my first A700,i still had my A350..but i shot a mate of my sons wedding, and found it a nightmare using 2 cameras with different interfaces etc..,so i decided to get a 2nd A700,especially as cameraworld were selling them for £500 :D

I'm finding it a problem with my Nikon D700 and my Sony A900 - I keep forgetting how to mount lenses, Nikon mounts anti-clock-wise. Sony clockwise. What was instinctive for years makes me stop and think everytime when attaching a lens since I'm been shooting with both :bonk:

The Minolta 35-70 f/4 is a nice little lens that is often priced quite low. It is sometimes referred to as the 'baby beercan' and is a nice little lens if you don't mind the (relatively) short zoom on it.

I was thinking about that one. Will it be sharper wide open than the 18-70mm?

Maybe I should just wait till I can afford something like a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8... I know I'm gonna want one eventually

A Question to Sony Users?

I have bought a Sony A380 just recently and I have the full kit with lenses and all. I am new to the DSLR world, but I am feeling that I should have bought a higher model like the 550, 700 or the 850. The only thing that was a concern was cost/benefit impact in addition at that price level other manufacturers had extra features like video capture.

I like my existing kit, so the question is: is it worth it to consider an upgrade now or should I wait for some time, maybe Sony comes with a model that has the video capture capability with enhanced features.

My kit today is as follows:

Sony Alpha 380
18-55 Sony Lens
55-200 Sony Lens
18-250 Sigma Lens
70-300 Sigma Lens
50-500 Sigma Lens
TCs 1.4x & 2x Sigma Lenses

The purpose I am interested to stick with Sony so I can easily interchange my lenses without having to re-invest in a whole set and kit. In addition, that I like Sony products and my existing camera overall quality.

If you like your camera, stick with it! You will not automatically get better quality from another SLR - the sensors are all very similar. Wait until you feel limited by your current camera (if you need lots of frames per second, very high ISO, etc.)

Your lens selection seems odd though .

I might consider cutting it down to just the 18-250mm and 50-500mm lenses, and use the money from the others to get something different. Maybe a 50mm f/1.8 for low light, and a 10-20mm or something similar for ultra wide-angle. You'll see far more difference from doing that, than from changing camera body

On the subject of Insurance Replacements for the A700, I've just registed my new one with Photoguard again who advised me to insure it for the market value of an equivalent model rather than the A700 itself as its is much cheaper than it was brand new.
I was advised to use the Nikon D300 as an equivalent and have insured my A700 for £1200

having had an A300 the A700 was too weighty and big for me.
The A550 would have been nice, but prefered the Nikon D90 as I had a Nikon before the sony. Personal choice I guess on feel

video isn't great on the D90 which I have if that's what you're after nor is liveview any good compared to the sony.

i moved to nikon as that is what i personally prefered having had a nikon before.

maybe a more specialist lens to suit?

No not at all, I feel it is a handful so far. It gives great pictures and all, I was reading an article on the 550 and the 700 and I was thinking did I make the right choice now, or should I change.

The video part on a DSLR was not a strong selling feature for me, it might been so when I bought my P&S kit.

Thanx guys you really helped me make up my mind on this. I welcome comments on the lens combination though.
