chris, try find another a700:D u wont regret it!
id imagine it would still be better than the A5xx bodies.

I have now turned this off too, it was quite anoying and a little pointless especially when your just carrying your camera and its just trying to focus on everything and nothing, as well as wasting your battery. Good tip puddleduck. Didnt know you could even turn it off.

I'm seriously considering it to be honest, I miss the breadth of lenses to be able to buy, the low light capability and the general handling of it,

I'm kind of swithering selling my Oly stuff and just grabbing a compact, TZ7 or something to do me over Christmas and New Year for the family stuff and then buying another SLR next year, I just haven't got the time I spend 4 days a week living in a hotel over looking Terminal 5 at Heathrow which kinda sucks!!!!
 
Soory that the Oly hasn't done it for you - you seemed so certain too :(
If you are a bit of a fair weather photographer (like me) then I would seriously consider waiting until the Spring.

As for the A500/A550 it looks to have some very good features, perhaps mising a few for the enthusiast & all in a body that isn't upto A700 build quality.
they've only just started shipping to UK retail so there isn't too much feedback yet.
David Kilpatrick has just got 1 though so expect a review in the not too distant future.
 
noob question but Sony 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 DT Lens or Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO Macro Super DG any opinions?

Yeah I was fairly certain at the time, I've just not "clicked" with the Olympus a few niggles here and there, just felt more comfortable with the Sony.

I think I will sell my Oly Kit, keep all my other gear, tripod, etc.
And grab a compact like a TZ7 to do me over the winter for the family stuff at Christmas, then look into buying into a new system next year, likely either Sony again or maybe Nikon but I really like having in body IS so more than likely Sony.

I had the A300 and then the A700, I thought I wanted something a bit smaller and I really liked the E620 from a play in the shops but now I have it its just not the Sony, just lost some of my enthusiasm for photography with it.

i wanted an upgrade to the a300 too but thought the a700 was too big for my needs.

i remember now you having the a300
 
Hi all,

I may be in a position to upgrade my camera body around xmas time, as long as the fund raising goes to plan, and I was just wondering that given the choice of these new A500/550's or trying to find a new A700, or indeed good second hand one, which would you go for?

nothing is really known about the A500/A550's as of yet,it would seem.body wise..the A500/550's is not magnesium as in the A700.also,the A500/550 is missing some of the buttons and the rear wheel that the A700 has....there's a review here..

personally,i would opt for an A700,but thats my choice :thumbs:
 
Don't want to jinx anything, but just thought I'd give a heads up for those that may not know about it, Stan is doing very well indeed in the 2010 TP Calendar Poll.

Bit early for champagne Stan, still 2 days voting left, but I'm sure you'll make the final cut! Fingers crossed for ya' mate!!!:thumbs:
 
Heres a hand tip for everyone out there, when going up to yorkshire for the weekend and spending lots of money on a new tripod and wellies to go jumping into waterfalls.....it helps if you remeber your A700.....

Angry with myself doesnt even cover it!!!

Honestly gutted for you, but that is quite funny!!
 
Your all rotten!! i also found it semi amusing after a while, what made it worse though was my fiance dropping her compact on the rocks at Aysgarth Falls......cue both of us with no cameras.....not our best weekend away!

And then to top it all off, there was loads of rain which created someamazing waterfalls shots.....well if i had my camera with me!

I phoned them up and it was collected by UPS on Monday 26th.

Just got an e-mail (unprompted) saying this:

Dear Mr Drake,

I am pleased to tell you your unit was completed in repair today and so will be
dispatched via UPS to be delivered with you tomorrow.

Gotta say I'm very very impressed with that - only 5 working days - and they had to order a spare part!!

Whats most impressed me though is the personal and very quick replies to e-mails, and unprompted status updates.

It really gives me confidence in the brand :)

Yes, I must admit I was impressed by that. I had 2 phone calls over the course of the 4 weeks just to let me know what was going on. :thumbs:

That's really good news ;)

It seems (hopefully!) that they are understand that good customer service for camera equipment that could be used by professionals, needs to be supported differently to other consumer electronics.
 
I get that impression too.

I think it might be time to let the rest of my Nikon gear go - I hardly have anything left now, just the D700 and D100 and just a couple of lenses now. I really don't touch the D700 at all now. I actually have more Minolta fit stuff than Nikon now, so I think I've gone over the tipping point...

After a bit of advice or even just some common sense kicked into me.
Recently I decided to use the 300mm end of my 70-300mm tamron down at the local nature reserve and was thoroughly unimpressed with the amount of CA and the softness in the end result. I've now somehow got it into my head that the relatively inexpensive solution is a 500mm reflex lens. Asking for 'advice' from my other half is pointless "Its your money, spend it on what you want" is the reply I'll get. I'm not asking someone else to make the decision for me, just is it a sensible step to make? Is there anything else I could consider for around the same price bracket?
I've found I prefer using prime lenses rather than zooms & my current comfort zone is with my 50 & 100mm macro lenses. I also suffer from magpie syndrome - ooh, shiney, got to have it!
 
Generally mirror lenses (reflex) are generally a bad thing. You'll be stuck at f/8 or f/11 and it's going to be pretty soft.

You could maybe try to find an old Sigma 500mm or Tamron as these are quite reasonable?

You need to get closer really :)
 
Cheers for the info puddleduck, I think I'll be having a look around for those shineys, see what I can find. I'll also try moving closer :)
